Cityclean staff paddle round the pier

A team from Brighton & Hove City Council’s refuse and recycling arm Cityclean, entered a raft in this year’s Paddle Round the Pier Festival today.

Paddle Round the Pier
Paddle Round the Pier: Bin Floatin

The raft named Bin Floatin was made from wheelie bins, pallets and other recycled items collected from around their Hollingdean depot. The team hopes to raise awareness of the importance of recycling which cuts down the amount of waste sent to landfill and reduces the city’s waste disposal costs.

The raft was in the Paddle Something Unusual, race alongside other handmade vessels today. Sponsorship money collected will go to charities chosen by the event organisers, including the RNLI, Freddysmile – a Sussex based charity that raises money for children with cancer, and SLSGB (Surf Life Saving GB), which teaches sea safety and encourages young people to lead an active lifestyle.

Paddle Round the Pier, known as the world’s largest free charity beach festival, has been running in Brighton since 1996 and last year attracted 55,000 people.

Entries in previous year’s competitions have included aeroplanes, cranes, beds and a shed.

Cllr Pete West said: “Paddle Round the Pier has become a popular regular in the Brighton events calendar and this year, instead of just clearing up afterwards, our Cityclean staff wanted to be a part of it. It’s a fun thing to do but with a serious message and a great way to raise money for charity.

“We wish them all the very best of luck on their maiden voyage and will be cheering them on from a dry vantage point on the beach.”

PREVIEW: GFEST 2014 ‘Myths & Mythology’: a dynamic experience for all arts lovers

GFEST Organisers are keen this year to work with LGBTQI networks to attract corporate investment.

GFEST

An eclectic cross-arts event for London’s autumn cultural calendar, GFEST – Gaywise FESTival 2014 will showcase new visual and performance art works and films, in November 2014.

GFEST 2014 theme is Myths and Mythology and the programme will incorporate contemporary as well as classical interpretations by the artists.

The festival will take place in venues across London during November 10 – 22 and there will an exciting array of events, London/ UK premiere of films and showcasing the work from established as well as up and coming talent – offering something for everyone to engage in.

Niranjan Kamatkar, artistic director of GFEST, will be travelling to Toronto in July to develop International performance work that will be shown in London.

Niranjan said: “I am hugely optimistic about this year’s showcase where, as each year, we will be presenting excellent work from a number of artists and filmmakers. For the first time we will be working with few artists to present new work specially commissioned for GFEST 2014.”

Niranjan hopes that the Toronto trip will further build upon the festival’s international reputation as a major queer arts event in London, a city that is now seen by many as cultural capital of the world.

Since 2007 GFEST has been widely recognised as a key London platform for LGBTQI arts. It has been presenting arts works that highlight the rich, cultural and artistic heritage that exists within the community. GFEST events have been proven to be a key mechanism for encouraging a dialogue between straight people and LGBTQI communities. The festival aims to challenge homophobic, bi-phobic and transphobic attitudes and prejudices through the use of arts.

North London based arts charity Wise Thoughts, organiser of the festival, is keen to work with various community, media partners and sponsors to present the festival that is known as London’s LGBTQI cross-art event for all.

The festival organisers are in discussions with a few corporate sponsors and some key London venues and arts organisations. Niranjan said the developments are encouraging, and he is confident to present “a much larger scale event” this year provided all potential sponsors and corporate LGBT networks help support emerging artists and the excellence in the arts.

The five sexy boys will appear at Pride after their show stopping performances of numbers from the musical Les Miserable during this years Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) TV series.

Formed just one month before their BGT’s audition in February 2014, Collabro’s glorious voices and hot styling made them early favourites to win the nations favourite talent show and they didn’t disappoint as the nation sang-along to their wonderful renditions of Stars and Bring Him Home from Les Miserables.

Brighton & Hove named top council for tackling homophobia and biphobia in schools

Just three months after dropping out of the Stonewall Top 100 Gay Friendly Employers Index, Brighton and Hove Council bounced back today and has been named as the top local authority in the country for tackling homophobic and biphobic bullying in schools.

Brighton & Hove CouncilStonewall, the LGB Equality charity has placed the council in first place in their 2014 Education Equality Index which rates the performance of different councils using a wide range of measures describing the council as “leading the way” in celebrating difference and supporting lesbian, gay and bisexual students.

They also praised the work the council does jointly with local charity the Allsorts Youth Project where young people from Allsorts deliver training to council and school staff and provided anti-homophobic bullying sessions in secondary PSHE lessons and primary school assemblies.

Blatchington Mill School came in for special mention for a Student Equality Conference it held earlier this year that was attended by 60 students from five secondary schools and St Nicolas’ Primary School for the innovative work it has done on challenging the use of homophobic and biphobic language in the playground.

Jess Wood, MBE, director of Allsorts the award winning LGBT youth project, said: “The council and our schools have done amazing work this year and deserve this great recognition. We cannot praise the schools highly enough. They have taken on the issues and worked tirelessly to change things for the better.

“We all work closely together and this mutual support and enthusiasm has made our schools and our city a safer place for lgbt children and young people.”

Hertfordshire Country Council and Wiltshire Council round out the top three performing local authorities in 2014.

Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus show their love for Brighton Pride

Brighton Pride without the Brighton’s Gay Men Chorus (BGMC) would be like a song without a melody or a vodka without a tonic, which is why they have been invited for the first time ever to sing on the Pride main stage this year.

Brighton Gay Men's Chorus

The chorus was formed in 2005 as a space where gay men could sing and socialise. They have gone on to win the hearts of many, featuring on the BBC’s Last Choir Standing and starring at the Barbican while all the time building a loyal audience in Sussex and beyond.

BGMC trustee Adam Betteridge said of the choirs forthcoming Pride plans: “The Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, as a registered charity, is entirely aligned with Brighton Pride’s crucial aims in promoting and celebrating the very best that Brighton & Hove has to offer both LGBT people and their friends, as well as the wider ambition of highlighting the many issues that LGBT people are confronted with on a daily basis around the world”.

“In the run up to the main Brighton Pride weekend, we are encouraging our more sporty members to enter a team for the Pride Sports Day on July 27, which will be followed by a performance at the MCC Community Service in the Brighthelm Centre on the same day. And of course we always look forward to putting on a good show during the Pride Parade! With the overall theme being ‘The Whole World’s A Disco’, we have decided to dedicate our float to ABBA’s 40th anniversary Eurovision win at Brighton Dome back in 1974”.

“We are over the moon to be performing the Main Stage at Pride in Preston Park, a first for the guys and something we have hoped to do for some time now! We are also intending on having an information stand in the Community Fair on the same day for people who are interested in learning more about our activities. It’s going to be a busy few weeks for sure!”

“At the very heart of all our activities is the fundraising work we do. This is a crucial part of Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus’ objectives as a charity in its own right, and every year we help raise many thousands of pounds for other organisations such as The Sussex Beacon, The Rainbow Fund, Lunch Positive, as well as lesser known charities such as Shine Theatre Group and Wolfram Syndrome UK. We are so fortunate to be working with the current Pride team who are so clearly striving to put community and charitable fundraising back at the heart of Brighton Pride”.
