Zander Murray becomes the first openly gay Scottish professional football player

Gala Fairydean Rovers striker Zander Murray has became the first openly gay Scottish professional football player after announcing it in an interview with his fifth-tier club on Friday.

The 30-year-old, who said the weight of the world was now off his shoulders, is the second openly gay player in Scottish professional football after late Hearts forward Justin Fashanu came out in the mid-1990s.

“I also want to help other players who are struggling with this as it isn’t easy for men, especially footballers, to deal with,” Murray said.

“It can be difficult and you can feel very alone. I knew I was different for many years but with other people in the game coming out it’s been amazing.”

Since coming out, the 30-year-old says he has been inundated with messages of support.

“It’s been crazy, I’ll be honest,” he told the BBC. “I didn’t anticipate the reach and how many people it’s inspired and motivated and the lovely messages.

“The private messages of people and fans alike, people from other communities, from other sports, football players in the leagues messaging me support, asking for guidance and help.

“It fills my heart with so much joy, and to be sitting here I’m so humbled. It’s amazing.”
