Shannon Murray, Research Assistant at the Substance Use Research Group, (SURG), Professor Katy Holloway, Dr Marian Buhociu, and Visiting Professor Rhian Hills, Senior Drug Policy Manager for Welsh Government, in collaboration with Gwent Drug & Alcohol Services (GDAS), would like to invite you to take part in a research study, which will explore drug and alcohol use and experiences of treatment in the UK’s LGBTQ+ population.
The researchers want to find out more about the experiences of LGBTQ+ groups in relation to their alcohol and drug use. The survey also aims to find out about treatment experiences and whether there is an underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ groups within treatment services, and if so, why this might be.
If you would like to take part, it will only take 20 minutes and you can enter a prize draw to win one of three £50 Argos vouchers.
The researchers say: “Our research project will focus exclusively on LGBTQ+ communities and seek to understand why some people in these groups use drugs and/or alcohol and why there is an underrepresentation of these groups within drug and alcohol services.
“We are working collaboratively with our partner, GDAS, to conduct interviews with LGBTQ+ individuals with lived (and living) experience of substance use in Wales.
“It is important to understand the experiences of people from within the LGBTQ+ groups and to provide them with a voice, as they are at a greater risk of hazardous alcohol and drug use than heterosexual cis-gendered men and women.”
If you are aged 18 years or older, identify as LGBTQ+ and have used alcohol and/or drugs in the last year, contact Shannon Murray to take part or for more info: Shannon.murray@southwales.ac.uk
