Two men charged with attacking trans women

Rachel Badham September 7, 2020

The attack took place on Hollywood Boulevard in August.

Carlton Callaway and Davion Williams have been charged for committing a hate crime after a video of them attacking three trans women on August 17 in Los Angeles was made public. Eden the Doll, Joslyn Flawless and Jaslene White Rose were reportedly waiting for a taxi on Hollywood Boulevard in the early hours of the morning when they were robbed and beaten by the two men. The incident was caught on CCTV and police later confirmed that the victims had their purses, phones and shoes stolen.

Jaslene White Rose was reportedly beaten unconscious, and police claimed Callaway was also armed with a crowbar. According to the Los Angeles Times, the two men are yet to enter custody. Both have been charged with assault and hate crime after police reported they made transphobic comments about the victims’ gender identities, although it has not yet been confirmed if Callaway and Williams were responsible for the attack.

Instagram influencer Eden was one of three women who were attacked.

Eden the Doll is an Instagram influencer with over 460,000 followers. A change.org petition calling for the prosecution of the attackers has amassed over 233,000 signatures.

Violence against the trans community has reportedly risen from 2019 to 2020.  The Human Rights Campaign say in 2020 at least 26 trans and gender non-conforming people, the majority of which were black trans women, have been killed in the US alone, which nearly tops the number of trans people killed in the entirety of 2019.
