The Clare Project, the transgender support and community group, has released a statement saying it is “deeply saddened” following the passing of community member Matty Sheldrick.

In a statement on Facebook, the charity said:

“We are deeply saddened to be sharing the news that our much-loved community member, Matty Sheldrick, has died.

Despite only moving to Brighton a year ago, Matty was known to many as a dog-loving poet and artist, often found juggling at the Clare Project’s drop-ins and Neurodivergent Group, or with their lovely dog Lola on our Community Walks. Beyond the Clare Project, Matty was admired by many for their provocative poetry and artwork, kind nature, and love for the sea.

Similarly to many of us in the trans/TNBI community, Matty had a turbulent battle with their mental health, and at only 29 years old, they died by suicide.

Our mental health services are on their knees. Our mental health services are not designed or made with us in mind. Difficulty accessing and/or navigating the broken mental health system is painfully exacerbated if like Matty, you are also neurodivergent or autistic. Our mental health system grossly failed Matty, and sadly it continues to fail many, many more.

Although they often struggled with making connections, Matty acted as a magnet for anyone looking to feel at ease in a world of chaos. A friend to so many, they will be hugely missed by us all.

We are continuing to support those close to Matty, their lovely family, our workers, and community members affected by the news of their death. The Clare Project are offering support to TNBI community members affected by the news at our Drop-in on Tuesday, November 28 from 3.30-4.30pm. You do not have to have known Matty to attend.

You can also leave cards/flowers/photos/things in memory of Matty in the chapel at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church (BN2 1RL) weekdays from 9.30am-12.30pm up until December 13 at 5pm.

You can call Samaritans (116 123) or National LGBT Switchboard (0300 330 0630) anonymously for support also, or if looking for advice information around thoughts of suicide CLICK HERE or download Apps such as Stay Alive or Papyrus UK.

If you would like to be kept updated about arrangements to celebrate Matty’s life, our work on health inclusion & equity, please sign up to our bulletin on our website. Alternatively, please email info@clareproject.org.uk for our updates list.”
