Events took place across the city on Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16 as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s Big Clean Up, which took place ahead of the city’s busy summer months.
The events included weeding residential streets in Hangleton, cleaning the gay village around St James’s Street, removing graffiti at Saltdean Oval and litter-picking at Woollards Field in Coldean.
In total, 23 clean up events took place in wards across Brighton & Hove and 1.2 tonnes of litter was collected over the weekend.
On the day of the events, councillors gave health and safety demonstrations, got stuck in with their activities and worked with groups of volunteers to clean up their wards.
Leave No Trace Brighton, a community led environmental group, supported the Regency ward clean up event on Sunday 16 July from 11am to 3pm.
Forty-one volunteers took to the beach to remove litter and cleared 25.2 kilograms of waste from the seafront.
Coral Evans, Campaign Manager at Leave No Trace Brighton, said: “We were absolutely delighted to be able to support the council’s Big Clean Up Regency event on Sunday.
“Collaborative efforts to inspire environmental stewardship, direct community action and shared care to help protect and preserve the health of Brighton’s coastal and ocean environment are extremely valuable, rewarding and effective.”
Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown, said on Facebook: “What a lovely day getting stuck into the St James’s Street clean up.
“Labour were elected in May on a pledge to clean up the city this weekend we were doing just that, from Moulsecoomb, Woodingdean, Queens Park and Coldean.
“I’m looking forward to the next one!”
