LGBTQ+ organisation, Stonewall UK, is hosting a webinar on Wednesday December 9 (more information of which can be found on Facebook) in honour of Rainbow Laces Day 2020, which is part of a two week long campaign designed to promote inclusivity in sports. Beginning at 3:15pm and lasting for half an hour, the event will be hosted by Jessica Creighton of Sky Sports, alongside a panel of sporting professionals. Topics of discussion will include how sport has helped many to get through the pandemic, and the panelists will share stories of how LGBTQ+ inclusion has positively impacted their lives and sporting careers.
Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign takes place every year, and the organisation has created various LGBTQ+ themed shoelaces (which can be purchased online) as a way for people to demonstrate their support for LGBTQ+ inclusivity in sports, with nearly one million pairs of laces being distributed across the UK.
Maria Munir, associate director of community engagement at Stonewall, said in a statement: “During a year which has exacerbated challenges for LGBTQ+ communities, sport has become even more important to keep up spirits and provide a vital support system so we can continue to be there for one another. That’s why we’re so pleased to be running Rainbow Laces this year, with a real focus on the importance of community and allyship, including in support of LGBTQ+ people of colour, disabled people, and trans people.”
