Saltdean Library welcomes customers back to historic Lido building

Graham Robson February 13, 2024

Saltdean Library, which has been operating from a temporary cabin since the start of refurbishment in 2022, is ready to welcome customers after extensive refurbishment to the historic Grade II* listed Saltdean Lido, officially reopening from today (Tuesday, February 13).

Opening times of the new library can be found on the library website.

The library space benefits from a full restoration complete with comfortable furniture and a new layout, creating a bright and modern community hub everyone can enjoy.

Readers can now look forward to a wider selection of books of all genres, including books in other languages, audiobooks and books for people with dyslexia.

There is a quality library offer for families, which includes a great selection of new children’s books and sensory and interactive elements in the space.

Children and parents or carers are invited to regular storytime and activity sessions that encourage play as well as reading for pleasure. There are IT and study spaces available throughout the library with computers, printers and a height adjustable desk for wheelchair users or those who prefer to stand.

Already hosting the local knitting group, the library wishes to encourage all groups and individuals to use the space to come together and share ideas and companionship.

Councillor Leslie Pumm, chair of the Equalities, Community Safety & Human Rights Committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see that the dedicated Saltdean community, who fought so hard to preserve and enhance the historic Lido building, finally gets to enjoy their wonderful library.

“The reopening of the library marks another important milestone in restoration of the iconic Saltdean Lido, which I have no doubt will become a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

“A congratulations, as well as a thank you, belongs to the volunteers at Saltdean Lido CIC and the devoted library staff that made sure Saltdean had a strong library presence even during the times of restoration.”
