PREVIEW: ‘Divas On Film’ at Duke of Yorks Picturehouse

Besi Besemar June 8, 2018

To celebrate Britney Spears coming to Brighton Pride, Duke of York’s are putting on a special season celebrating the best of Divas on the big screen.

PRIDE is the jewel in the crown of the Brighton summer – an event that both locals and visitors look forward to all year.

The entire city is transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours and glitter for the entire weekend, the rainbow flag is flown from public buildings and every vantage point on the Pride Parade.

This year promises to be bigger than ever, with global pop icon Britney Spears, headlining the event at Preston Park on Saturday, August 4 with her complete Las Vegas show, Piece Of Me.

To celebrate, the Duke of York’s Picturehouse is putting on a mini-season called Divas on Film. Starring the best and brightest ladies in world cinema in iconic film roles, the season promises to be the perfect way to get yourself hyped up for a fantastic Pride weekend.

Like Brighton Pride itself, the films in this season will dazzle audiences, whether it be your first or fiftieth time watching them.

First of all, on Saturday July 28 at 6pm, Dreamgirls (2006) is showing. The classic movie, starring Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, follows the Dreamettes on the way to stardom, and the price that comes along with it. Based on the Broadway musical, the film is “overwhelmingly emotional, with something to say and a dream cast saying it in song.” Queen B struts her stuff in this timeless classic

On Monday July 30 at 9pm, Burlesque (2010) starring Cher and Christina Aguilera is being screened. It follows Ali as she moves to Los Angeles and begins working in a Burlesque bar where she uses her incredible voice to delve deep into the glamour. The film is filled with saucy dance numbers, a beautiful cast and stella advice; “if you fall.. Remember, legs extended, boobs out.”

Rounding off the season on Thursday July 3 at 9pm, is Crossroads (2002) starring Britney Spears and Zoe Saldana. This classic film follows three friends and a stranger along a road trip across the United States. This is a perfect opportunity to get ready to see Britney herself live in Preston Park on August 4 and sing along with her classic songs.

All three films showcase incredible music from fantastic women whose songs will be blasting across all venues throughout Pride weekend. They are stories of hope – about following your dreams, and being who you truly are.

Put on your sparkliest dress, strap on some high heels and make sure you attend the best pre-Pride event Brighton has to offer.
