Tuesday December 8 is Pansexual Pride Day 2020; an event dedicated to celebrating the pansexual community as part of Pan Week. According to LGBTQ+ organisation, GLAAD, pansexuality falls under the bisexual+ umbrella, with the “pan identity presenting an additional opportunity to express attraction to multiple genders.” However, GLAAD highlights that pansexuality doesn’t receive a great amount of media representation, with Pansexual Pride Day aiming to bring more visibility to the community and share the stories of pansexual and/or panromantic people.
Numerous celebrities identify as pansexual, including Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne and Janelle Monàe. Rapper and singer, Angel Haze, is also part of the pan community, and previously said during an interview: “To kind of identify as pansexual, to me, means to just want love. To have a connection with anyone you can find it with…Love is boundary-less. If you can make me feel, if you can make me laugh—and that’s hard—then I can be with you.”
This year’s Pan Week saw singer, Yungblud, come out as pansexual in an interview with Attitude magazine. When asked if he considered himself part of the LGBTQ+ community, he said: “I know it’s such a massive statement to me, but probably, yeah, I think I would,” adding: “My sexuality is mine and I’m proud of it…I love everyone. I’m attracted to everyone.” He believes his previous partner, Halsey – who is openly bisexual – helped him discover his sexuality, saying: “She taught me so much”.
Many are celebrating Pansexual Pride Day on social media, with Akt, an organisation for homeless LGBTQ+ youth, wishing everyone a happy day, and providing details of where young pansexual people can access support if it is needed. BiPride UK also tweeted in celebration of the day.
Happy Pansexual Pride Day!
