This week is international Ace Week (formerly Asexual Awareness Week): a worldwide campaign to celebrate the asexual and aromantic communities, debunk myths surrounding the identities and promote equality. According to Ace Week official: “An asexual person experiences little to no sexual attraction and/or sexual desire. Our community uses the word ace to encompass anyone who fits within the spectrum of asexuality.”
Asexual Awareness Week was first founded in 2010 by Sara Beth Brooks, who wanted to encourage more conversations about asexuality, and since then “Ace Week has organically morphed into a celebration of ace identities alongside the continuing campaign for ace acceptance.” Although Ace Week celebrations and talks have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, there are multiple online events, a full list of which can be found here.
Many are also celebrating on social media, with the LGBT Foundation tweeting: “asexual and aromantic people are a vital and loved part of LGBT communities. We are proud to celebrate and support ace and aro people today and every day.” One user also created a Twitter thread explaining ace identities and attitudes towards sexual relationships.
Happy Ace Week!
