Twenty seven charities from all sections of the local communities in Brighton & Hove will get the ‘seal of approval’ from Councillor Pete West during his term as the new mayor.
Councillor West, the Green Councillor for St Peter’s and North Laine, who took office on Friday May 13, has revealed his new approach to supporting charities in the city.
Instead of working with three of four charities, as Mayors in previous years have done, to create fund-raising opportunities, Cllr West has selected 27 organisations, giving them permission to use the Mayor’s crest and title for the whole of the civic year.
Councillor West said: “My hope this that this approach will provide a platform for a greater number and range of local charities. What they tell me is that publicity is as valuable as generating income and this new approach will provide a new opportunity to reach out and make themselves known; particularly for smaller organisations.”
The Mayor’s charities for 2016/17 will be:
1. Action on hearing loss (formerly RNID)
4. B&H Impetus
5. BMECP Black & Ethnic Minority Ethnic Community Partnership
6. Brighton Housing Trust
7. Carers Centre for Brighton & Hove
8. CCHF Action for Kids
10. Emmaus Homeless Project
12. Friends, Families and Travellers
13. Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals
16. Martlets Hospice
19. Resource Centre
20. Rise
21. Sussex Beacon
24. The Fed, Centre for Independent Living
26. Sustrans
