Liberal Democrat leadership contender Layla Moran has accused the government of ‘dragging its feet’ on banning gay conversion therapy, after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in an interview with ITV News that the government will first carry out a study on the issue to see how prevalent it is.
It is now two years since the government initially announced it would introduce a ban on gay conversion therapy. A national survey of 108,000 members of the LGBTQ+ community carried out by the government at the time found 2% have undergone the practice with another 5% having been offered it.
Layla Moran MP tabled a motion in Parliament to ban LGBTQ+ conversion therapy last month that now has the backing of 21 MPs.
Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said: ‘The government must stop dragging its feet and ban gay conversion therapy for good. No-one should be told that their identity is wrong and needs to be cured.
‘We have already waited two years for action on this vital issue. Young people who are being subjected to this harmful and outdated practice should not be made to wait any longer.’
