LGBT Safety Map installation comes to Dome at Pride

The Safety Map, an installation inviting the LGBTQ community to share their experiences of Brighton and Hove, will be at Brighton Dome from August 3-7, coinciding with Brighton Pride.

The quilted map of Brighton, created by Pink Fringe to ignite a conversation about safety, risk and visibility, will occupy the Founders Room and audiences will be invited to contribute their own stories if they wish, by writing on luggage tags, which will then be stitched on to the relevant location on the map, bringing the piece to life. Artist Kate Shields will facilitate.

Stories could include tales of street harassment, names of safe spaces in the city, areas that historically held some relevance for the LGBTQ community or spaces that the community could benefit from knowing about – such as gender neutral toilets in the city.

Illuminating the high levels of unreported hate crime faced by LGBTQ people in Brighton & Hove, The Safety Map seeks to offer support and resources for those who are affected.

This is the second presentation of The Safety Map, which is supported by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, and was previously at The Marlborough Theatre in March 2016.

Abby Butcher from Pink Fringe, says: “We are so thrilled to present The Safety Map in Brighton Dome over Pride; this time of year is an opportunity for celebration but we must also remember the battles the queer community are still fighting. The Safety Map offers you a voice, a conversation or simply a cup of tea and a moment of contemplation amongst the hubbub of Pride weekend. It is a space to talk, reflect and make change.”

A community workshop will take place on Sunday, August 7, 12-5pm, in Brighton Dome Founders Room, open to all who identify as LGBTQ+, responding to the key themes of The Safety Map.

The workshop is free, but ticketed and will be led by with award-winning theatre maker and performer Emma Frankland whose work in recent years has been focused on issues around gender and identity (relating to her own transition as a trans woman) and politically motivated performances.
