Hungary’s anti-LGBTQ+ prime minister, Viktor Orban, has publicly denounced European parliament member and one of his strongest allies, Jozsef Szajer, who was arrested after attending what has been branded a ‘gay sex party’. Szajar was caught trying to escape the party, which broke coronavirus restrictions, while 20 other male guests were found naked. Szajer is the founder of the anti-LGBTQ+ Fidesz party, which has supported Orban’s crackdown on Hungary’s queer community. He also helped to draft new regulations which will prevent same-sex couples from adopting if passed sucessfully.
Szajer released a statement, saying: “I am sorry that I violated the rules on gathering, it was irresponsible of me, and I am taking the sanctions that come with it,” and has consequently resigned from his position, but he has not yet discussed any further details of the incident. Orban responded to the situation, saying: “The actions of our fellow deputy, Jozsef Szajer, are incompatible with the values of our political family. We will not forget nor repudiate his 30 years of work, but his deed is unacceptable and indefensible.”
He continued: “Following this, he took the only appropriate decision when he apologised and resigned from his position as member of the European Parliament and left Fidesz.” The host of the party, David Manzheley, who claimed he did not know Szajer personally, defended the attendees: “We talk, we have a drink – just like at the cafe. The only difference is that in the meantime, we’re having sex with each other. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. We’re all adults, everything is by mutual consent.”
