Gscene profiles some of our new LGBTQ+ MPs

As the newly elected parliament is convended, over the last two weeks we have been profiling some of the new LGBTQ+ MPs who have been elected to the House of Commons. This is our final proifile, sbould any more LGBTQ+ MP’s come to our attention we will let you know.

Their inclusion on our site does not indicate that they campaigned on LGBTQ+ issues, although we will report as such if they have, but that they are openly ‘out’ and as such have the opportunity to represent our broadening communities in parliament.

Elliot Colburn is one of the youngest Members of Parliament aged 27. He gave the Liberal Democrats one of the bigger shocks of the General Election ousting stalwart Tom Brake who had held the seat since 1997. The Conservative party have not held this seat since John Major’s government in 1992.

Colburn was born at St Helier Hospital in the London Borough of Sutton close to the Carshalton and Wallington seat he now represents.
He has during his campaigns expressed a desire to fight for trans rights and reform the Gender Recognition Act, supports Brexit but mostly campaigns on local issues. Conservative Party candidate for the 2020 London mayoral election Shaun Bailey has campaigned with Colburn locally, Bailey has a controversial past in relation to LGBT issues citing his Christian beliefs as paramount to his position.

In the final election count in the early hours of December 13th, there were less than 700 votes in it with both Colburn and the incumbent Lib Dem candidate securing more than 20,000 votes each.

Colburn had been sitting as a member of the local council which is held by the Liberal Democrats.
