London annual gay cross-arts festival GFEST 2014 announces line-up of events featuring newly commissioned works presented along with curated LGBTQI art.
GFEST 2014 films, performances and other events programme will be announced shortly.
For the first time, the GFEST visual art exhibition includes newly commissioned art works. The exhibition will be open from Monday, November 10 to Saturday, November 22 at Menier Gallery on Southwark Street, London.
Works exploring this year’s festival theme Myths & Mythology include thought-provoking paintings, video installation and photographic image works.
Artistic director Niranjan Kamatkar, said: “The GFEST 2014 programme spells out an ongoing challenge to attain social equality in the realms of the art world for LGBTQI artists. Working with the commissioned artists to showcase their work at this year’s GFEST has been truly inspirational. Artists have interpreted the theme of myths not only in classical and contemporary contexts and I hope the artworks will pose as mythical creations for future generations.”
Headliners include:
• Challenging art works from established artists like Sadie Lee and Matthew Stradling will lead the showcase.
• João Trindade’s work will present promising new digital images.
• Enzo Marra will show his Francis Bacon series along with art works of Berlin- and London-based artist Mathias Vef. The exhibition will also include ‘mythical’ interpretations from younger artists like Gökhan Tanriöver and Jenny Welton.
A panel discussion is planned on Friday, November 21 to discuss LGBT Myths and Mythology, looking at past, present and future practices; it will involve GFEST 2014 artists, an art critic and a renowned academic.
