Two teenagers have been found guilty of the “frenzied” murder of transgender schoolgirl Brianna Ghey.
Brianna was just 16 when she was stabbed 28 times at Culcheth Linear Park near Warrington, Cheshire, on February 11, in a crime that appalled Britain and trans communities and allies worldwide.
Her killers, identified as Girl X and Boy Y, were both 15 when they were spotted fleeing the scene before being arrested by police officers barely 24 hours after murdering Brianna.
Officers later discovered a handwritten note detailing how they were going to murder her, headed: ‘Saturday 11th February 2023. Victim: Brianna Ghey’.
During their trial, both teenagers blamed each other for Brianna’s killing, telling the court their backs were turned when the other defendant attacked Brianna.
Since the shattering impact of Brianna’s murder in February, her Brianna’s mother Esther Ghey has focused her grief into a campaign that encourages children to behave with ’empathy and compassion’ to one another.
Their Peace In Mind campaign, run with support of the Warrington Guardian, aims to deliver mindfulness techniques in primary and secondary schools.
Esther Ghey said: ‘The crime that was inflicted on Brianna is not a one off,’ she said. ‘Senseless acts of violence are happening far too often.
‘I believe to prevent this from reoccurring we need to weave empathy, compassion, and resilience throughout our society.’
