“Gay and trans people will be more afraid.” Jamie Lee Curtis reacts to US election results

Oscar winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis, whose child Ruby is trans, has reacted to the US election results, saying that gay and trans people “will be more afraid” after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 United States presidential elections.

Trump defeated incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris to be re-elected as the 47th President of the United States, the first US president with felony convictions and who is set to become the oldest US president to be elevated to the position.

The Halloween and Everything Everywhere All At Once actress, took to Instagram to mourn the election results, as she emphasised that “minority groups and young people will be afraid and denied of their rights.”

“It means a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time. Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied. Many minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid. We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve. For all those people, there will be those who will help you. Me included,” she expressed.

The former president, along with his running mate J.D. Vance, secured more than the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the presidency.

Both have been accused of seeking to roll back key LGBTQ+ rights, while millions of dollars were spent on adverts using anti-transgender messaging during the campaign.

LGBTQ+ advocates and allies have described a possible Trump administration as dangerous for the community, citing policies against gender-affirming care for minors, education in schools, and protection from discrimination.
