American Express adds gender-neutral title Mx following pressure from LGBTQ+ campaign

Gender-neutral title Mx has been added to the credit card application forms of financial services company American Express following pressure from LGBTQIA+ campaign Include Mx.

The 2021 Census found that 30,000 non-binary people live in England and Wales. Of the non-binary people who use a title, most prefer Mx according to the Gender Census 2023.

Include Mx started a petition on change.org in March 2024 titled Urge American Express UK to stop excluding non-binary people from credit card applications which reached over 100 signatures.

The petition was signed by at least one former Amex employee and existing customers.

Include Mx founder Tom Pashby said: “Its fantastic to see Mx having finally been added to Amex’s forms, ending Amex’s exclusionary attitude towards non-binary people like me.

“It’s embarrassing that Amex publicly admits to having spent billions on inclusivity schemes but managed to have this serious slip up for so long.

“Despite having excluded us for so long, it’s a very welcome sign of progress at the company that Amex added Mx in Pride Month.”
