Alex Consani becomes first ‘out’ trans woman to be nominated for top honours ahead of 2024 Fashion Awards

Graham Robson August 22, 2024

Model Alex Consani has celebrated a major milestone by becoming the first out trans woman to be nominated for one of the top honours ahead of the 2024 Fashion Awards ceremony, which are presented by the British Fashion Council to a model who has, over the last 12 months, “dominated the industry, with an influence that transcends the catwalk”.

Consani was nominated in the model of the Year category, alongside other rising stars and veterans, including Alva Claire, Amelia Gray Hamlin, Anok Yai, Liu Wen and Mona Tougaard, who is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Although Consani is still early in her career, she has been modelling since 2015, and, at 13, she became the youngest transgender model to sign with a modelling agency, according to The Independent.

Although she noted that she had a positive upbringing in the Bay Area’s Marin County in California, Consani told The Independent that it wasn’t until a visit to New York City to check out colleges that she felt as if she had truly found a ‘community’ for trans people.

Although Consani is the first woman nominated for model of the year who identifies as trans, she is technically the second transgender person overall.

In 2023, Kai-Isaiah Jamal, who came out as a trans man in 2014, was nominated for the honour.
