Absolutely Fabulous creator Jennifer Saunders has revealed that an iconic character of the show is gay in a new 90-minute special Absolutely Fabulous: Inside Out, which sees Jennifer reunited with co-stars Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha and Jane Horrocks.
During the chat, Jennifer (who played character Edina Monsoon) dug out some original notes, including one that revealed Jane Horrocks’ character, Edina’s PA Bubble, “is gay.”
Going through the old papers, Jennifer reads aloud, “‘Bubble is gay’, it says here.”
“Bubble is gay!” she repeats, shocked. “I never knew that.” The note goes on to ponder, “What is her girlfriend like?”
Jennifer added of the character, “She was a mystery. We never went too much into Bubble, because it’s quite nice just to have a slightly surreal character.”
Inside Out is the first time the quartet have filmed together since the 2016 film based on the beloved sitcom.
In the special, the women recall the last time they were all together was two years later, at the 2018 funeral of actress June Whitfield, who played Mother.
In October 2023, it was confirmed that Saunders was in the process of creating a spin-off to Absolutely Fabulous (a film or series), which has yet to be announced, with the possibility of Lumley making an appearance.
