Brighton & Hove’s LGBTQ+ communities and allies made a lot of noise at Jubilee Square for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Wednesday, May 17.
Organised by the city’s LGBTQ+ choir, the Rainbow Chorus, there was a good turn out of community members from across LGBTQ+ communities. Local HIV charity Lunch Positive kindly provided light refreshments and the event was sponsored by the Brighton & Hove Council‘s LGBTQ+ Workers Forum – a good community effort to mark this important day.
Aneesa Chaudry hosted the event, opening with a speech about the importance of being an active ally, calling out the toxic culture of transphobia in the UK right now, and honouring those who had come before us and struggled so hard to ensure we had the freedoms to live authentically.
Rainbow Chorus sang four songs, including a spine-tingling versions of You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen, which moved the crowd, and a beautiful rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water to close the event, which the crowd sung along with, followed by a huge loud, vibrant minute of noise.
There were then short speeches and performance from: Hazel from RC+; Merry the Poet; Gina and Katy from Rainbow Chorus; and newly elected Labour councillor David McGregor.
