A night of ska and punk for Matty Sheldrick at Green Door Store to raise funds for Clare Project

Graham Robson May 15, 2023

The Clare Project, the transgender support and social group, is to benefit from If We All Speak At Once: a night of ska and punk for Matty Sheldrick, who lost their life in November 2022. Headlining this fundraising event at Brighton’s Green Door Store on Saturday, July 15 is The JB Conspiracy with support from Dakka Shanks and Phat Problem.

Organisers of the event say: “Matty Sheldrick was an infinitely kind, gentle, funny, talented artist and poet. After struggling with his mental health for several years, Matty decided to move to Brighton to be more involved with the LGBTQ+ community and to enjoy the brilliant music scene that the city has to offer.

“During his time in Brighton, Matty found a great deal of solidarity, support and comradeship in The Clare Project, an organisation run by and for TNBI folk, and attended many gigs. When Matty’s mental health took a turn for the worse, he was left at the hands of an underfunded mental health service that, devastatingly, failed to protect him.

“As a result, Matty passed away on November 22, 2022, aged 29. While Matty’s end was a harsh and unnecessary one, it is incredibly important that the lives and voices of trans folk are still celebrated and heard – we want to honour Matty’s life and share his story with his community and allies.

“Even if you did not know Matty personally, you are welcome to come and enjoy the music he loved and learn more about this brilliant human that so sadly left us.”

Tickets £8 with 100% of sales will be donated to The Clare Project. Tickets can be bought on the door, with unwaged/low-income donation options available for those who would otherwise be unable to attend.
