Photographer Chris Jepson has launched a Kickstarter campaigner to fund Volume 1 of The Identity Project Zine, which is a selection of portraits of the LGBTQ+ community in Brighton & Hove.
IDENTITY is a project by award-winning photographer Chris Jepson, exploring what it means to identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community today.
For more than two years, Chris has photographed people who identify as LGBTQ+ and asked them, ‘what does Identity mean to you?’.
The black and white images in the zine encourage the viewer to look beyond the trappings of location and engage directly with the sitter, while the diverse faces of LGBTQ+ people from innumerable walks of life aim to challenge the stereotypes and assumptions to dispel the myths of perceived identity.
IDENTITY gives visibility to marginalised LGBTQ+ people while promoting a diverse and inclusive community.
Selections of the images have been widely exhibited but this is the first time it has been published.
Chris said: “I have started a Kickstarter campaign to fund this first volume and there is a strictly limited edition of 50 signed and 100 unsigned copies available from just £10. Any surplus funds will go back in to the project so I can photograph more people.
“I am hoping to include everyone I have photographed in Brighton & Hove so far in the zine, so please do check it out and buy one if you can.”
