Brighton & Hove Green Party will be hosting a virtual pub quiz on Wednesday, September 2 from 7.30pm with 50% of money raised going to the Brighton Women’s Centre, which has been supporting self-identifying women in Sussex for over 40 years, helping them live happier and more fulfilling lives.
The Brighton Women’s Centre helps women from all backgrounds, facing all kinds of issues, including bereavement or trauma, homelessness, the criminal justice system, abuse or discrimination.
As a result of the lockdown restrictions, many organisations like the Brighton Women’s Centre have been forced to stop the majority of their face to face support for vulnerable women. Although the Brighton Women’s Centre are running support remotely where they can, they are struggling to help the women who need it most in these uncertain times. As restrictions ease, they need help to start up their face to face support again.
Lockdown has resulted in an unprecedented rise in recorded instances of domestic abuse. At the height of lockdown, in April, the UK’s largest domestic abuse charity Refuge reported a 700% increase in calls to its helplines in a single day. According to the charity Stonewall, more than one in ten lesbian or bisexual women have faced domestic abuse from a partner, with the number rising to 19% for trans women. Conditions for vulnerable women have only worsened throughout the pandemic.
