Brighton & Hove City Council is to be flying the Red Ribbon flag from the town halls for the first time this year to mark World AIDS Day on Thursday, December 1.
Held globally each year on December 1, World AIDS Day is a chance to show support for people living with HIV, and commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.
Brighton & Hove City Council said: “The Red Ribbon is an important symbol of awareness and is just one way to visibly show our commitment to the fight against HIV. Brighton & Hove is also proud to host to some of the best HIV support, treatment and prevention services in the country.
“In 2017 Brighton & Hove became the first UK Fast Track City, a global initiative to end HIV, and we have made good progress against our goals. 95% of people living with HIV in Brighton & Hove are now diagnosed. 98% of those are on treatment, and of those on treatment, 99% have achieved viral suppression.
“This is a fantastic achievement, but the challenge remains to identify and treat the remaining undiagnosed infection and address HIV-related stigma and discrimination.”
