Maspalomas Pride 2020 has been postponed due to Covid-19. Spain`s biggest Pride event after Madrid was scheduled for May 7th-17th in Gran Canaria. The event regularly draws thousands of LGBT+ visitors from around the world.
Organisers Freedom Association LGBT announced new dates, October 2nd-11th, which have been criticised locally. Maspalomas Fetish Week had previously announced the October dates for their event. LGBT+ businesses. which are mainly focused around the Yumbo Centre, have expressed concern that there will be too much overlap between the two festivals and are unhappy about the lack of consultation with them.
“It has never been more important for us to stand together in the face of these uncertain times” said the Yumbo`s LGBT+ business organisation GLAY. “It is with great concern that we learnt, via social media, the new dates of Maspalomas Pride. To overlap established events such as Maspalomas Fetish Week and the close proximity to Winter Pride leaves us with more questions than answers.”
Winter Pride is a separate festival run by ProGay and is scheduled for November 9th-15th.
Freedom Association LGBT said it did consult people, particularly the council, the Gran Canaria tourist board and the community owners of the Yumbo.
“With the announcement of the new dates, many employers of Maspalomas are happy with this change. All tickets purchased for any of the official events will now be transferred to the new dates or we will honour them for Maspalomas Pride 2021.”
Although called Maspalomas Pride, the majority of the events are held in and around the Yumbo Centre in the resort of Playa del Ingles where a number of gay exclusive bungalow complexes are based. Billed as “the world`s craziest and funniest Pride” Maspalomas Pride is predominantly attended by gay and bisexual men.
Part of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria has long been a popular choice as a winter sun destination due to it`s temperate climate. Nature lovers are drawn by the world famous Dunes of Maspalomas.
Freedom Association LGBT also run the annual Freedom Festival which was scheduled for September 29th-October 4th. This year`s Freedom Festival has been cancelled.
