Following an incident that happened on Hurst Street in Birmingham in the early hours of Sunday, September 11, a doorman for Glamorous nightclub has been called a hero after chasing and tackling a suspect who was wielding a large sword. Armed police arrived shortly after to arrest the man, who was said to be carrying a blade roughly 20 inches in length.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “A man has been charged following reports of a sword being waved around on Hurst Street on Sunday morning.”
A witness told BirminghamLive: “Everyone started running everywhere, but then the bouncers ran after him and confronted him by Southside Apartments. They had him under control when the police arrived.
“The bouncers at Glamorous deserve bravery awards for chasing the man with the sword. They were heroes.
“They didn’t have to get involved, but their instinct was to protect the public and make sure no-one was hurt. I thanked them afterwards for how brave they were.”
A statement from Glamorous following the incident said: “We’ve worked extremely hard on ensuring that we provide a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.
“This incident could’ve been a lot worse than it was, if the brave member of our door team hadn’t stepped in. This incident and our door team member’s extremely brave response highlights the kinds of people we have working our door.
“They are willing to go that extra mile to ensure that you the customer are safe whilst with us.”
While SNSG – the Security Provider – added: “The events of Sunday, September 11 are a lot of people’s worst fears come true. We believe everyone has the right to enjoy a night out in Birmingham, free of discrimination, threat or being targets of a hate crime.
“We stand with the community of Birmingham, regardless of race, gender, beliefs or religion, to ensure that everyone feels safe and secure no matter what they are doing.
“We cannot be prouder of the member of our team who so bravely risked his life to save others that night. We pride ourselves on providing the best training to our team to ensure they are prepared in any situation or circumstance to ensure complete protection of others and the safety of themselves and we are so proud that he was the first response to this particular incident as he handled it incredibly well.
“We know that sadly this incident is not a unique one but we hope that the community feels safer knowing SNSG are on their side and are prioritising their safety above anything else for their day/night out.”
