Greens urge Council to bypass water companies

Council urged to bypass profit-making water companies and make bid to supply its own water. “Option to buy water ‘direct’ from supplier cuts out water companies and their profit margins, say Greens.

PLANS for the council to cut out water companies and buy water directly from the supplier could drive down costs and benefit the environment, Greens have said.

As part of a proposal going to Policy, Resources and Growth Committee this afternoon (July 18), Green Councillors are hoping that Brighton and Hove City Council will become the latest to apply for a ‘self-supply licence.’ 

The licence, granted by the water regulator OfWat, would allow the council to become a purchaser in the water market, cutting out water companies who often charge a premium.

Councils such as Blackpool, who have been awarded the licence, identified that ‘self-supply’ could save £194,00 over three years and improve customer service. Councils opting to self-supply are also given greater say over the management of the water supply – moves that Greens say will benefit the environment.

Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, who is proposing that the council explores the option to ‘self-supply’ water, said: “With news that Southern Water has been fined a record £126 million for wastewater and sewerage spills, as well as deliberately misinterpreting performance, it’s clear that water privatisation has failed us and our environment. Greens will continue to fight for an end to water privatisation – and while that fight goes on, we want to see residents given the democratic oversight over water they deserve. 

“Exploring the option to ‘self-supply’ water would allow the council to directly buy water services – cutting out the water companies and their profit margins.

“On top of lowering bills, the city’s water supply would be brought under direct democratic oversight – including wastewater management, giving us the opportunity to do more for our environment. Crucially, councils who opt to “self-supply” are also given a say in how water is managed nationwide. We are pushing for Brighton and Hove to become the latest council to challenge how water supply is owned and run– for the good of our residents and environment.”  

 

Kylie joins young Brighton dancers in video for Brighton Pride

Kylie Minogue headlines Brighton & Hove Pride on August 3, 2019, so Brighton based 201 Dance Company decided to do something special to welcome her to the city.

LED by choreographer Andrea Walker, the company brought together 80 young dancers from Brighton with videographer Ben Mark Films to create a dance video to her latest single New York City, celebrating young LGBT+ life in Brighton.

When the company told Kylie about the project, she loved the idea so much that she joined in, popping up in the video for a very fun cameo!

The video was shot on location in iconic places around Brighton, with a mix of professional and community dancers.

201 producer Patrick Collier said: “Kylie is such a pro, and such a lovely person. Having her involved made this a really special celebration of LGBT+ Brighton and meant so much to the dancers involved”.

 

After less than 24 hours, the video is already going viral in China, with over 100k views and counting! Last year, 201 Dance Company’s dance video welcoming Britney Spears to Brighton Pride went viral, gathering almost 150,000 views in a few days.

Choreographer Andrea Walker said: “Kylie has been a massively influential artist in my life and my career. She shaped my adolescence with songs like In Your Eyes and Red Blooded Woman, and has stuck by me till today with hits such as All the Lovers, Timebomb and Dancing. She has always been outspoken about her support for the LGBT+ communities: Growing up in Italy as a gay teen wasn’t easy, and Kylie’s support never went unnoticed to me, as I’m sure it didn’t to thousands other LGBT+ individuals around the world. We love you Kylie, thank you for your music, your talent, and for being the inspirational artist you are.”

201 Dance Company brings together artists and producers to create daring new work that is socially responsive and accessible. Their artists share a drive to tell stories that matter and give a voice to underrepresented groups, while bringing striking and original dance to diverse audiences.

201 was founded in 2014 by choreographer and director Andrea Walker, producer Patrick Collier, and a team of 6 hip hop and contemporary dancers and the company’s ethos centres around creating challenging dance-theatre that crosses hip hop and contemporary genres.

GTR unveils ‘trainbow’ to celebrate our LGBT+ communities

Govia Thameslink Railway unveils a special edition train emblazoned with a rainbow livery ahead of the upcoming Brighton & Hove Pride.

THE eye-catching makeover of the Thameslink Class 700 train was designed by a GTR apprentice and celebrates the rail company’s thriving LGBT+ communities.

Dubbed ‘trainbow’ by GTR colleagues, the 12-carriage train was given its new look in recent weeks at Hornsey depot in north London in a team effort featuring colleagues from branding, fleet and engineering.

It will be part of the Thameslink fleet operating an enhanced service for hundreds of thousands of revellers travelling to and from Pride which is just two weeks away on August 2-4, and is Brightons busiest weekend of the year.

The rainbow design will also be used on merchandise and GTR’s first-ever float in the Pride parade which will carry members of the company’s LGBT+ network and other colleagues. It is accompanied by GTR’s Pride motto: “Our people bring out our best colours”.

Maggie Luckhurst, 21, GTR’s Design and Content Apprentice and a member of its LGBT+ network, said: “This was a really special project to work on for me, and I’m grateful that I got to work alongside many other fantastic people in the company. I’ve always had a huge interest in the railways, so to be able to combine that with my creativity in this job has been a dream. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this train on my commute.”

Maggie, who joined the marketing team through GTR’s apprenticeship programme in April 2018, added: “Whether you’re a member of the LGBT+ communities or not, I hope that the train brings joy to everyone who sees it and that it also raises awareness of LGBT+ issues.”

Stuart Meek, Train Services Director and chair of GTR’s LGBT+ network, said: “We are absolutely delighted to see the train out in passenger service. This symbol of support shows how everyone is welcome on our services and celebrates our LGBT+ colleagues.”

GTR’s LGBT+ network is made up of colleagues and advocates from departments across the organisation. It serves as a support and social network and making plans for Pride have topped the agenda at recent meetings.

GTR, which runs Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services out of Brighton, is preparing for an enhanced rail service during Pride with services running late into the night on Saturday evening to help get visitors to the city get home.

Following months of planning with event organisers, Sussex Police, Brighton & Hove City Council and other local partners, there will be additional and longer services throughout the weekend

An enhanced ‘rainbow’ queuing system will channel passengers leaving the city into the appropriate queue for their train before they get to the station.

Last month GTR pledged to do even more to attract and retain more women working in the rail industry and as part of this effort has established a Women’s Network Group.

GMB union targets Brighton Pride weekend for industrial action

Organisers of Brighton & Hove Pride react to the announcement that Brighton’s bin men will go on strike over the weekend of Brighton Pride.

YESTERDAY, (Monday, July 15, the GMB Union issued a notice to Brighton and Hove City Council announcing Cityclean staff will stage full-day walkouts on Monday, July 29, as well as August 2, 3, 4 and 5. An overtime ban will also run until August 5.

The strike follows the failure to settle an ongoing dispute with Cityclean at their Hollingdean Depot premises where the Union has accused the council of “anti union behaviour.”

A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove Pride says: “Following the announcement yesterday that GMB union members are planning to go on strike over Brighton & Hove Pride weekend; we have contacted the union expressing our concerns on the effect this will have on the city, residents, visitors and businesses.  

We want to reassure visitors to Pride that we facilitate and manage the cleansing of all our official sites and the immediate surrounding area. Through our recently established City Angels initiative we have been reaching out to local retailers, restaurants, hotels and other businesses to promote and encourage shared responsibility for keeping the areas around their businesses clean, tidy and litter free.

In addition, we have sponsored The Big Pride Silent Disco Beach Clean on the Sunday of Pride weekend.  

In an increasingly divisive climate both globally and domestically, Pride is an opportunity to come together and celebrate the great diversity within our communities and great city.  We sincerely hope that the action is called off over Pride weekend.

A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove City Council says: “We’re still fully committed to resolving any outstanding issues through the ACAS talks to ensure the service we provide for our residents and businesses is maintained and not disrupted.

“During talks between the council, the GMB and ACAS there has been clear agreement on most of the issues that the union has concerns about, and another round of talks are due to take place this Thursday.

“We take seriously the allegations of anti-trade union behaviour and are investigating this.

“We’re also very disappointed that trust between the council and GMB has broken down, but we’re confident this trust can be rebuilt to the benefit of the service.

“The council has received a number of allegations and counter allegations which need to be investigated and we’ve agreed with the GMB to appoint an independent person from outside of the council to review this.

“The council has clear standards of behaviour to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect at work, and it is important that when there are allegations these are investigated appropriately and fairly through our procedures.

“We would therefore hope the union still meets on Thursday with ourselves and ACAS and seek to resolve the issue and avoid industrial action.”

Mark Turner, GMB B50 branch secretary, adds: “It’s been very much a case of one step forward two steps back by council officers in the meetings facilitated by ACAS, several times we thought that a settlement to the dispute was imminent as we seemed to agree on much more than divided us and that we were at the stage where simply changes to some wording in the working document was the only final stumbling block to avoid.

“We couldn’t have been more wrong as agreements we thought were signed off by all three of the city’s political parties were then revoked by the council officers and further vexatious claims against representatives of the GMB union suddenly appeared, leaving the officers demanding that the GMB rep’s exclusion from the Hollingdean Depot continued, even after agreeing that he should return to the workplace.”

All parties are meeting for further discussions with ACAS on Thursday, July 18.

Disability rights campaigner makes shortlist for national award

http://www.nationaldiversityawards.co.ukA man who has campaigned for disability rights after beating the odds to recover from a late diagnosis of HIV has been shortlisted for the UK’s largest diversity awards.

ROLAND Chesters, from Surbiton, has fought off competition from a record number of nearly 30,000 entrants – to be named as one of just 124 nominees in the 2019 National Diversity Awards.

Roland, who works as a disability development consultant at Luminate, said: “It is an amazing honour to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award.  I’m very grateful to everyone who took the time to vote for me.”

Roland, 59, was given just two weeks to live at the time of his diagnosis. He suffered long term effects on his brain and motor skills because the virus was picked up at a late stage.

But he has overcome chronic ill health, post traumatic disorder and discrimination to help bring about greater disability rights in the workplace.

Roland, who has been shortlisted for the Positive Role Model Award for Disability through a combined public vote and judging panel, is tackling the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS.

He has spoken out at events and in the press, as well as sharing his experience in his book, Ripples from the Edge of Life.

The event, whose supporters include Graham NortonStephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE, honours those who have worked tirelessly to combat injustice and discrimination.

Roland is among a host of activists and campaigners, including a reformed gangster and junior bake off star, to be recognised for their work.

Paul Sesay, founder and CEO of the National Diversity Awards, said a record number of nominations and votes were received this year.

He said: “I know our judging panel had an incredibly difficult task of whittling down the nominees to create an outstanding shortlist.

“So many heartfelt testimonies really showcased how these people and organisations are having a profound impact on the lives of others, and I applaud them for their dedication to each specific cause.”

Roland helps employers in various industries to create an inclusive workforce and for their employees to develop confidence in their role.

The Royal Holloway University of London graduate supports a number of charities and community projects, such as the Terrence Higgins’ Trust (THT) Positive Voices, where he speaks about HIV at schools, colleges and workplaces in order to tackle existing stereotypes.

Roland said: “I have personally faced discrimination because of my HIV diagnosis and those who ‘come out’ face the very real threat of ostracism and verbal and physical attacks.

“Amongst others, I have worked with a man who was beaten up and sexually assaulted by his own family when he shared his status with them. I have also supported a mum-of-two who was excluded and attacked by members of her own community.

“It’s time we end the stigma and fear surrounding HIV and AIDS. I want to speak out for those who may be more vulnerable – letting people know ‘this is who I am and because I am on effective medication I cannot pass on the infection’.”

Simone Howard, a senior volunteer coordinator at THT, has praised Roland for sharing his story with young people and adults. She said it has helped to ‘reduce stigma and discrimination faced everyday by people living with HIV’.

Roland, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2006, has volunteered as a mentor with Positively UK, a charity which offers peer-led support.

He has also sat on a number of boards, including the National Long Term Survivors Group (NLTSG), which supports HIV Positive people, the London AIDS Memorial Campaign and Disability Rights UK – where at the time he was the only gay, disabled person on the board.

Roland will attend the award ceremony at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on Friday, September 20, where winners in various categories will be announced.

Actress and comedian Sally Phillips will take centre stage as the official host of this year’s ceremony.

She said: “I am delighted to be hosting the 2019 National Diversity Awards. Acknowledging and celebrating the hard work and stand out achievements of role models and community groups throughout the UK is a genuine honour for me.”

Previous winners include actor Warwick Davis, football’s equality and inclusion organisation Kick It Out and freedom fighter Abbey Kiwanuka.

HSBC, Direct Line Group & MI5 have recently been announced as sponsors of the pioneering awards that have paid tribute to over 700 grass root charities and diversity champions since its inception.

A spokesperson for MI5 said: “It is MI5’s mission to keep the country safe, and it’s vital that we represent the diverse society we seek to protect.”

Drug-related deaths in Scotland highest in Europe

New statistics published today by the Scottish Government show a 27% increase in drug related deaths (DRDs) in Scotland.

THERE were 27% more DRDs in 2018 than the year before, with 1,187 drug-related deaths registered in Scotland in 2018.

This is the largest number of drug-related deaths in Scotland since records began in 1996.

Opiates or opioids, such as heroin, morphine and methadone, were implicated in, or potentially contributed to, 1,021 deaths (86% of the total number in 2018).

A third (33%) of the DRDs were in Greater Glasgow & Clyde, where an HIV outbreak continues to affect a severely marginalised group of people who inject drugs publicly.

Despite the high rate of DRDs and an ongoing HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs, the UK Government continues to block the opening of a Drug Consumption Room in Glasgow, where illicit drugs can be used under the supervision of trained staff. These facilities primarily aim to reduce the acute risks of disease transmission through unhygienic injecting, prevent drug-related overdose deaths and connect high-risk drug users with addiction treatment and other health and social services. These units have been operating in Europe for the last three decades.

Yusef Azad, Director of Strategy at NAT (National AIDS Trust), said: “The high rate of drug-related deaths constitutes a public health and humanitarian crisis which must be addressed urgently.

“These figures clearly demonstrate the urgent need for Glasgow to be allowed to open a Drug Consumption Room, which is a proven way of reducing drug-related deaths and supporting people into treatment.

“The UK Government must make allowances for Drug Consumption Rooms in law, so that everyone working to tackle drug-related deaths in Glasgow has the all tools at their disposal.”

Stonewall FC triumph in Rome Eurogames

Stonewall FC won their sixth consecutive IGLFA European Championships this weekend as their Stonewall Lions team claimed victory at the Eurogames in Rome.

AFTER a gruelling three days of football in the 30 degree Roman heat, the Lions retained their title with a 4-0 win over fellow London LGBT+ side, London Falcons.

Manager Eric Najib said: “It was a tremendous effort from all my players and staff and we are delighted with the result which sets us up nicely for the upcoming domestic season”.

Chairman Alex Baker added: “The IGLFA European Championships at Rome Eurogames was a fantastic footballing event, demonstrating the continued importance of having inclusive environments for sports participation. I’m immensely proud of the team for having won the tournament.”
