Brighton LGBTQIA+ History Club is to present a new show from theatre maker Tom Marshman, Section 28 And Me, which weaves personal material and explores queer stories on past invisibility and shame.
Part autobiographical, part community archive, the show, which is at the Old Courtroom in Brighton on Sunday, September 22, attempts to explore the impact of Section 28, which was legislation from 1988 – 2003 that stopped schools mentioning queer life.
During the making of this show, Tom met with LGBTQ+ communities across the country, leading tea parties with over 200 LGBTQ+ people. The show brings this collected archive of information together and weaves it into a new performance which considers moments from Tom’s past body of performance work in an attempt to see his own life through the prism of Section 28.
In this new show Tom asks: has the impact of growing up within Section 28 legislation made him both a show off and an oversharer? Digging deep into his psyche, drawing on personal reflections, past performances, and his Dad’s unique perspective, he considers this period of forced silence.
Tom asked many queer communities: what is your Section 28 story? Gathering inter-generational voices, connecting history and politics with the deeply personal, to celebrate the resilient LGBTQ+ community.
