Lights of the West End to be dimmed on December 3 for gay theatre star Gavin Creel, who died in September aged just 48

The lights of four West End theatres will be dimmed on Tuesday, December 3 for gay Broadway and West End star Gavin Creel, who died in New York in September aged just 48.

Creel, who performed at Prince of Wales Theatre (where he starred in The Book of Mormon), Prince Edward Theatre (where he starred in Mary Poppins), Gielgud Theatre (where he starred in Hair), and Adelphi Theatre (where he starred in Waitress), died from metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, which he was diagnosed in July 2024. These four theatres will dim their lights on December 3.

On Monday, December 2, the Society of London Theatre will be streaming a memorial live from New York on Youtube, allowing those based in the UK to celebrate Creel’s life.

The family has requested that any gifts in Gavin Creel’s memory be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

At the time of his death, Cameron Mackintosh, who produced Creel in Hair and Mary Poppins, and who owns the Prince of Wales, Prince Edward and Gielgud Theatres, paid tribute to Creel, saying: “He was adored by everyone in the profession.”
