SPOTLIGHT ON: Maisie Trollette film gets a Brighton showing

Brian Butler February 3, 2023

Lee Cooper’s fly-on-the-wall film about the legend that is Maisie Trollette – Britain’s oldest performing drag artiste – gets a Brighton outing in March in the bar where much of it was filmed.

Maisie, (David Raven) is currently motoring sedately towards his 90th birthday but Cooper’s film was made during the preparations for his 85th. (you can read Scene magazines review here)

So it’s fitting that the location for the film’s central performance – Legends Bar – will host a special screening of the film, complete with Q and A session, on Wednesday 8 March.

The film perfectly captures the glittering polished performance of a drag star that comes out of the chaos and mayhem of preparations in the dressing room. Aided by theatre producer, director and actor Allan Cardew, there are entertaining appearances from drag royalty Dave Lynn and Miss Jason (Jason Sutton).

The film covers the week of David/Maisie’s 85th birthday in 2018 and includes a visit from the self-styled oldest drag artiste in the world, the then 89-year-old Walter Cole, aka Darcelle XV. It’s worth it to see the sparks fly between the two !

So to catch the ups and downs of life upon the wicked drag stage, go see this celluloid tribute to one of Brighton’s and the LGBTQ+ community’s brightest and longest shining stars. Tickets – outsavvy
