PREVIEW: A New Version of the classic musical Pippin unveiled

Brian Butler August 26, 2020

Stephen Schwartz , creator of musicals Wicked,  Rags, and Godspell has given permission for a new slimmed down version of his classic 1972 Broadway hit Pippin to be staged in the garden theatre at Vauxhall’s Eagle bar.

The show, with a cast of  6 highly talented performers follows on from the knockout debut production of Fanny and Stella, the musical at the same venue.

Pippin features Ryan Anderson, Tsemaye Bob-Egbe, Tanisha-Mae Brown, Joanne Clifton, Harry Francis and Dan Krikler. It’s directed by Steven Dexter – fresh from Fanny and Stella, with musical direction by Michael Bradley and choreography by Nick Winston.

Originally directed on Broadway by the legendary Bob Fosse , it tells the story of Prince Pippin who inherits his father Charlemagne’s throne and tries to be a well-intentioned reformer. Both characters existed but the story is entirely fictional.

The show features a group of rather strange medieval strolling players who tell the story with Pippin as their new star actor.

It’s probably best known for the catchy tunes Magic To Do and Corner of The Sky . Dexter says his take on the show is that it’s a group of hippy travellers – getting this inspiration I guess from Schwartz first attempt at the show in the Flower Power and anti-Vietnam era of the late 1960’s .

I’m told that the show is selling  extremely quickly so I suggest you book now if you want to catch a little outdoor gem, though a little bird tells me it’s bound to have its run extended. The show is produced by Peter Bull for LAMBCO Productions.

Pippin is at the Garden Theatre, the Eagle, Kensington Lane, London from 8 September .
