The Ledward Centre launched an exhibition in collaboration with SEASBrighton and guest curator Dr Khaliden Nas on February 8 entitled Our Spaces: Queerness & Nightlife & Brighton & Hove.
LGBTQ+ artists working in the South East have been invited to examine the topics of ‘Queerness and Nightlife’ as it relates to their experiences in the region.
SEASBrighton and the Ledward Centre have sought to platform the work of underrepresented artists whose work exists on and around Brighton’s queer dance floor.
SEASBrighton said: “We hope this collection inspires conversations about the transient nature of the art made in this space, the complexity of its existence and its continued relevance for the greater project of queer liberation.”
Included in this collection:
– Stella Michaels, who contributes a collection of photographs from the ‘80s and ‘90s which considers how fetish club spaces allowed for explorations in punk, kink and identity, particularly for trans people.
– An installation by Jack Ball featuring 3D renderings and event photography from Polyglamorous that reflects on the art being created in and for Brighton’s queer nightlife today.
– An installation by Kaleido Shoots about queer joy and performance in the club space.
– A collection of Mandy Sweats’ mask creations for the club and the stage.
– Kate Loxton‘s illustrations for Gal Pals Club that reflect the joy, celebration and political engagement of their club nights.
– A collection of photographs by Pierre Monnerville, reflecting on gayness, desirability and the club.
SEASBrighton has also produced a limited run of prints of the work featured that will be sold for the duration of the exhibition, and they invite you to support contributors by buying their work – all profits made go to them and their associated charities.
