Welsh actor Luke Evans has opened up about starring in gay drama Our Son opposite Billy Porter.
The film, which premiered at last year’s Tribeca Festival, sees Evans and Pose‘s Porter as successful New York couple Nicky and Gabriel, who are raising a young boy together. Gabriel eventually confesses to being unfaithful before filing for divorce, leading to a custody battle over their son.
“It was the first time I’d read a story like this from two gay people’s point of view,” Evans said.
“We’ve seen the celebration of being gay, of gay marriage, of having children and all of those wonderful things, but not so much the splitting up.
“When gay people were given the right to marry, we were also given the right to divorce. And [these stories] are important. They allow everybody just to go, ‘We’re all the bloody same – we’re all dealing with the same things.'”
Further along, Evans also touched on working with Porter on the project, sharing: “We’re both proud gay men in an industry where there isn’t so much of this going on, you know?
“Gay men playing these roles and telling these stories… I thought that was very powerful and important.”
In another interview, the star suggested it’s Hollywood’s “responsibility” to explore queer stories.
“They need to be told, and I think that it just should be common,” claimed Evans. “I think we are seeing way more queer stories in the mainstream entertainment platforms, and that’s very important. Society is full of so many different kinds of people, all going through very, very similar things.
“And we need to see that presented and represented on our screens, and on stages, in television and film.”
