Graham Robson July 15, 2024

This Friday it’s a double bill of trans film at the Duke of York Cinema in Brighton as part of the 11th Annual Brighton International Trans Film Festival, which received a record number of submissions this year.

The first screening is of incredible short films from all over the globe with doors at 6.30pm and screenings from 6.45pm.

Immerse yourself in a collection of thought-provoking short films celebrating trans narratives from across the globe. This screening is during Trans Pride Brighton weekend and will set the stage for an empowering celebration. In addition, the occasion will honour outstanding short films in diverse categories, recognising the remarkable talent and creativity within the trans community globally.

This is a charity film night, with funds raised going back into trans community groups. The festival is supported by Picturehouse / Duke of York Cinema, Not A Phase Charity, Foundation by Facial Team and Trans on ScreenTickets HERE

CROSSING

The second screening is of CROSSING by acclaimed director Levan Akin (And Then We Danced). The film is a moving and tender tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders and generations.Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour Achi that her long lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey.Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her.

Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search.

Humanistic and compassionate, Akin’s third feature is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us.

My Genderation and Brighton International Trans Film Festival co-founder Fox Fisher will be hosting a panel after the screening, with some very special guests. Tickets HERE

Fox Fisher

Fox said: “Welcome to the 11th international Trans Film Festival, formerly known as the Trans Pride Film Showcase. We are so delighted to be back with a carefully selected curation of trans films from South Korea, Germany and even the Isle of Scilly.

“The film selection this year was impressive in both quantity and quality. We had 114 submissions, which was initially narrowed down to about 8.5 hours of content, and then finally whittle down to the selection you are watching today. We noticed some interesting themes, like art and music and will put on future screenings in Brighton and London since the work is so strong and deserves to be screened.

“We are so grateful to Picturehouse and the Duke of York Cinema who have hosted us over the years at a reduced hire rate, allowing all ticket sales to go back to trans organisations who are supporting the community.

“We hope to include panel chats, workshops and more screenings next year, so watch this space and get involved if it’s something that you’d like to see flourish.

“Please can we give a warm round of applause for our generous supporters and sponsors, Not A Phase Charity, the Foundation by Facial Team, Trans on Screen and My Genderation.

“Big thanks to Pickles and Max, Lewis Hancox, Sharon Kilgannon.

“The prizes for the best doc, best fiction and best animation will be announced at the end of this screening.

“Enjoy and happy Trans Pride!”
