Brighton LGBTIQ+ History Club returns for an afternoon of stories, talks, and local(ish) heritage at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery on Sunday, March 26 from 2.30 – 4.30pm.
For this edition, Brighton LGBTIQ+ History Club will be joined by Screen Archive South East (SASE) and Margate Pride to hear about the exciting work they have done in queering the archive.
For the past 18 months, SASE at the University of Brighton, Queer Heritage South, Margate Pride and Folkestone Pride have been working together on a project to celebrate, preserve and share the LGBTQ+ film heritage of Kent and the South East: Our Screen Heritage.
Digging deep into SASE archive, and reaching out to local communities, a team of curators and volunteers have uncovered video material from local queer communities, home tapes, Pride documentation, as well as generated new footage.
Mia Pollak (Margate Pride) and Ellie Turner Kilburn (SASE) will share video material and stories of their journey into queering this incredible moving image archive. Ellie Turner Kilburn will consider the ways that the archive has worked to expand and queer its collections, look at footage collected as part of the project and provide information about ways attendees can add their own stories to the archive. Mia Pollak will speak of the journey Margate Pride and a group of volunteers curators went on to unearth and create local moving images of the community!
The event is a sober space, tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided.
