Lt Cdr Craig Jones MBE RN author of the The book Fighting with Pride joined the Royal Navy in 1989, later to become the first ‘out’ LGBTQ person the Armed Forces, leading that community through a bewildering period of change is speaking at the event along with Lt Elaine Chambers, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, who was a nursing officer in Cold War Germany but was dismissed after being ‘found out’.
His book marks the 20th anniversary of the lifting of the British Armed Forces ‘gay ban’ on 12 January 2020. It brings together a selection of stories from LGBTQ service men and women who have served in the Armed Forces since the Second World War featuring their testaments demonstrate their loyalty, their courage on the battlefield, and their unswerving sense of right and wrong even in the face of personal costs.
This event is organised in collaboration with the newly formed charity, Fighting with Pride, and the Solent NHS Trust.
