Hidden Stories: why we don’t talk about our invisible conditions

Graham Robson May 12, 2019

Brighton arts charity Root Experience publishes new book about what it’s like to live with an invisible condition, which it’s donating to local communities in Sussex and beyond.

HIDDEN Stories is a powerful, playfully illustrated graphic novel based on the everyday experiences of people living with conditions whose symptoms aren’t easily identifiable to others such anxiety, autism, diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome.

With Hidden Stories, Root Experience aims to inspire more people to speak out about their lives – while also encouraging others to listen compassionately. That’s why the charity is giving away all 8,000 printed copies at eight free events across the south of England.

Hidden Stories On Tour will be at Jubilee Library in Brighton on Saturday, May 25 from 10am–3pm as part of Brighton Fringe.

Visitors to the library will be able to collect free copies of the book, meet some of the contributors, join in conversations and find out more about the project.

There will also be a photography exhibition and interactive games that guide self-exploration.

If you’re unable to make the Brighton event, Hidden Stories On Tour is also visiting:

♦ Woking Library: Saturday, May 4 from 10am-3pm

♦ The May Fayre, Portsmouth: Monday, May 6 from 10.30am-4pm

♦ Reading Central Library: Saturday, May 11 from 10am-3pm

♦ Chichester Library: Saturday 18 May from 10am-3pm

♦ Crawley Library: Saturday, June 1 from 10am-3pm

♦ Swindon Library: Saturday, June 8 from 10am-3pm

♦ Oxfordshire County Library, Oxford on Saturday, June 15 from 10am-3pm

Organisations (such as wellbeing centres, GP surgeries, universities, workplaces and community groups) can contact Root Experience (rachel@rootexperience.org) to secure a number of copies.
