Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven has spoken directly to the Chancellor, George Osborne urging him to release funding for the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The hospital, which is in Mr Kirby’s constituency, is earmarked for £420 million of redevelopment funding. However, concerns are growing locally over the delays in the release of those funds.
Mr Kirby has campaigned hard for the release of the redevelopment money, maintaining a consistent dialogue with the Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt. He also launched a petition on his website www.simonkirby.org where residents can add their name to Simon’s campaign for the £420 million investment in the hospital to be handed over as soon as possible.
Mr Kirby said:
“This morning in my discussion with the Chancellor I reiterated a number of points that I have consistently raised with both him and the Secretary of State for Health. I explained to him the importance of the Royal Sussex to people in Brighton and the wider area, and the clear need for redevelopment of hospital buildings which are unfit, or becoming unfit for purpose.
“The financial arrangements for the delivery of the hospital and its services have been carefully drawn up and scrutinised and I am hopeful the plans will go ahead. Both the Chancellor and the Secretary of State have always been very receptive to the arguments I have made for the release of the funding, and I am sure that the Government will do the right thing.”
