Hospital re-development will not be costly PFI

Sarah Green October 22, 2014

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, has welcomed news that the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital will not be a project under the terms of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

THE ANNOUNCEMENT came after Simon had quizzed Ministers about the cost of PFI deals agreed by the last Labour Government in a series of written questions.

In response to his questions, Ministers have detailed PFI liabilities worth billions of pounds over the next twenty years. The Ministry of Defence have forecast that their total liabilities are worth £29.4 billion with the Home Office supporting local police force areas with PFI contracts to the tune of £1.4 billion up to 2034/35.

Simon said: “Thankfully, the redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital is not funded through a PFI contract which should guarantee value for money on much needed improvements in Hospital facilities.

“It has been known for some time that the PFI contracts signed by the last Labour Government are poor value for money but the scale in some of these figures is astonishing, with taxpayers in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven left picking up the bill.

“With taxpayer money funding the repayment of these costly projects, there is less money available to spend improving our public services.

“I will continue to champion the local taxpayers of Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven.”
