Kemptown MP call for tougher stance on travellers

Sarah Green July 12, 2014

Simon Kirby, MP wants Brighton & Hove City Council to to be more pro-active in asking Brighton Police to move on unauthorised traveller encampments in Brighton & Hove.

Simon Kirby MP

Mr Kirby’s call follows a meeting with the Brighton Police Chief Superintendent, Nev Kemp at John Street Police Station in Brighton.

Simon said: “My constituents are rightly fed up with the frequent unauthorised traveller encampments that occur in the Brighton Kemptown constituency. I immediately take up any reports I receive with the police and the City Council but I am not only looking for swifter eviction but also a clear signal to be sent to traveller groups that Brighton is no longer the soft touch that so many think it is.

“It is time for a different and tougher approach to travellers in the city. In my discussions it became clear to me that the City Council needs to reconsider its policies, especially regarding welfare checks, so that unauthorised encampments can be moved on more quickly.”
