IN A LETTER to MPs, Mike Penning, the Minister of State for Police, Criminal Justice and Victims, has announced the Government will amend the Serious Crime Bill to increase protections for victims of the practice.

Measures announced include:

• Introducing a new offence of failing to protect a girl from risk of FGM

• Changing the law to grant lifelong anonymity for victims of FGM

• Introducing a civil protection order to protect potential or actual victims of FGM which will operate in a similar way to a Forced Marriage Protection Order.

Simon said: “I am pleased that the Government is committed to stamping out FGM and is moving further to support victims of this terrible practice.

“Every crime has a victim and the victims of FGM deserve as much protection as the Government can provide.

“Many of my constituents in Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven deserve to know that the Government is taking action to protect girls from FGM.”
