Jo Brand visits Cityclean depot in Brighton

BAFTA winning comedian, writer and actress Jo Brand visited Hollingdean Depot Learning Resource Centre yesterday, Wednesday 6.

Jo, who recently appeared on the judging panel of the ITV celebrity Diving Show Splash, found out about the range of courses on offer to Brighton & Hove City Council’s refuse, recycling, streets and parks staff and congratulated those who have achieved qualifications this year.

Jo was invited to visit the centre by GMB union learning rep Wes Lee Emond, himself a former winner of a Learner Award.

The council’s City Services thriving Learning Centre offers staff the chance to develop their learning and acquire new skills which will benefit them both in and outside work.

This year saw another high number of staff taking up learning opportunities with 99 enrolling on at least one course.

Popular courses include literacy, numeracy, ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) and IT, while courses in French, creative writing, assertiveness and communication have also been well attended.

City Services Learning works in Partnership the GMB union and with a variety of education providers including Sussex Downs College, Central Sussex College and Learn Direct,

Jo is the latest in a long line of celebrities to visit the depot following an invitation from Wes. Others have included Julie Walters, Jeremy Paxman, Dame Vera Lynn, author Peter James and Heather Mills.
