Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove & Portslade, has signed Early Day Motion 57 which calls for a fair deal for licensees tied to large pub companies.

The Motion encouragesĀ  the Government to enact a statutory code of practice to enshrine principles of fair dealing and to ensure that tied licensees should not be worse off than free of tie licensees.

Currently, large companies take more than is fair or sustainable from pub profits in both inflated product prices and excessive rents, which causes failure of pub businesses nationwide. Pubco’s can pay double the price for a barrel of beer than pubs that are not tied.

Mike said:

ā€œThis bill will help to secure a sustainable future for Britain’s pubs. Pubs are in many areas central to community life. Licensed pub owners are important to the industryĀ  so a fair relationship between large pub companies and their licensees could result in a reduction in illegal traders of alcohol and create a boost to the economy.ā€
