Over the years, Charles Street have built a solid reputation for good value dining attracting both “the ladies who lunch crowd” during the afternoon and those who like to grab something to eat on their way home after finishing work.
THEIR new summer menu includes some new healthy options while retaining popular tried and tested deals including two (selected) meals for Ā£6.95 every day, two for one pizzas on Tuesdays, two for one desserts, all day every day andĀ aĀ sandwich and a drink for Ā£5.45.
To help those watching their waistline during the summer months, a new Topped Salad section has been introduced:
First choose a salad base, either aĀ Kitchen Salad of mixed leaves, tomato, cucumber and spring onion with a delicious lime and chilli dressing (65 cal) or a Summer Salad with mixed leaves, apple, pumpkin seeds, cabbage, onion, parsley and a lemon dressing (145 cal); then you have a choice of adding Gilled Chicken Breast, Ā£5.50 (160 cal), Chicken & Chorizo Skewers, Ā£7 (450 cal), or the vegetarian option, Grilled Halloumi, Ā£6 (310 cal). The lime and chilli dressing on the Kitchen Salad is particularly memorable and the freshly cooked chicken offers a tasty healthy option for those counting the calories.
New to the Sandwich and a Drink section is a Chicken, Chorizo & Tomato Flatbread costing just Ā£5.45 Ā (chips are Ā£1 extra). The chicken is delicious with a tasty blend of chorizo and tomato. This is my favourite new dishes on offer and the price includes the choice of a pint of Guiness, Cider or Lager and various soft drinks.
Charles Street burgers are excellent value starting with a classic burger and chips costing just Ā£5.95. New to the summer menu is the Great Balls of Fire Burger (Ā£8.25) a classic 6oz burger topped with crispy chipotle pork balls, extra hot sauce, salad, a gerkin and chips. The sauce is served on the side so taste it before pouring over your burger. It is very spicy, but if you like spicy food you will love this dish.
The Pizza sectionĀ has been expanded for this new menu with a good selection of 12 inch pizzas available. If you want a healthier option, try Pizzas Light, a half size pizza with a Kitchen Salad and dressing on the side. Pizza light is available for all Pizzas except the new top of the range Onion Ring Tower of Pizza (Ā£7.75) which comes with fresh chicken, red pepper, pepperoni, jalapeƱos and a six onion ring tower. It is great value and with the delicious house tomato sauce gives any Italian Pizza restaurant a run for its money. Pizzas start from Ā£6.95 or Ā£5.95 for Pizza Light and you get two for the price of one all day every Tuesday.
NewĀ to the Chicken Section is The Rooster-Booster (Ā£8.45) offering a HUGE serving of half a BBQ chicken, three chicken wings, three buttermilk fried chicken strips, coleslaw, chips and served with a Cattlemen’s Carolina Tangy Gold BBQ sauce. The freshly cooked chicken was moist and tasty while the sauce is exclusive to the group who own Charles Street. Highly recommended.
New to the Favourites Section is the Chicken Katsu Curry (Ā£5.75). Buttermilk fried chicken strips with rice, Katsu curry sauce and a summer salad garnish. If you like Katsu Curry sauce well worth trying. If you don’t like Katsu best steer clear as it is an acquired taste.
If you just want to have a quick snack, new to theĀ Starter and SidesĀ menu are the Crispy Chipotle Pork Balls (Ā£3.75). They are moist, tasty and carry a lingering after kick. Make sure you try the Tabasco Sweet Chipotle and Cola Sauce which is served on the side.
Finally after tasting all the above I left a little room for the Salted Caramel Chocolate Slice (Ā£4.14). In my humble opinion the best pudding Charles Steet have ever offered on their desert menu and most importantly it is available on the 2-For-1 Deserts deal all day every day.
