Kemptown MP accuses Labour of playing party politics over local hospital

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven accuses local Labour Party of playing party politics over the issue of funding for the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Following his election, Mr Kirby has led a long running campaign to secure redevelopment funding for the hospital, on behalf of his constituents and people across the region. However, he claims the Labour group on Brighton and Hove City Council have consistently refused to get behind the campaign, choosing instead he claims to spread misleading information which he has shown to be inaccurate.

At a Council meeting tomorrow, Thursday March 27, he claims that Labour will repeat their false claim that funding is being unnecessarily delayed by the Government. Mr Kirby says that Nancy Platts, the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven has previously suggested that funding was secured under the previous Government, an allegation which he says was completely discredited in a letter from the Health Secretary. Despite these claims being shown to be inaccurate, he says he awaits an apology from the candidate.

Mr Kirby said: “The Royal Sussex County Hospital is important to everyone in my constituency, regardless of which party they support. We all want to see this redevelopment, which is why I find it so disappointing that the Labour Party would propose this unhelpful motion when the campaign is entering such a crucial period.

“By claiming that funding is essentially in place, or that it is being delayed for political reasons, the Labour Party have either misunderstood what is happening with the hospital, or they have intentionally tried to mislead people. I find that disappointing, particularly on an issue that should transcend party politics.

“It is right that the business case for the hospital redevelopment is properly scrutinised, to ensure value for taxpayers money. Obviously previous PPI schemes signed off under the previous Government were devastating for the public finances, and we don’t want to see a return to that kind of reckless spending.

“My hospital campaign has seen a huge amount of support from constituents, regardless of whether they vote Conservative, Labour, Green or any one else. I would urge the Labour Party to stop treating our local hospital like a political football, and get behind my campaign for a final, united effort on behalf of everyone who relies on the Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

In her response, Nancy Platts, the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Kemptown and Peacehaven, says: “People in Brighton want to know when the hospital will be built – but this Government has no answer. Labour got this off the ground but David Cameron again failed to make any commitment when he visited our area this week.

“Simon Kirby must also answer for the A&E crisis his Government has inflicted on our hospital. Patients in Brighton have experienced some of the worst A&E performance anywhere in the country over winter, with hundreds of patients waiting too long and many on trolley for hours on end – they deserve much better.”

Futsal come to Exeter

Exeter City is holding its first ever One Game One Community (OGOC) five a side Futsal tournament next Sunday (March 30).

Exeter City FC

Players from local black and minority ethnic communities have been especially invited to participate at the event which is being held in the University of Exeter Sports Hall.

The Exeter City Supporters Trust backed One Game One Community (Kick it Out) Group aims to promote equality and diversity through football related initiatives. A regular outdoor summer tournament is held but this is the first time an indoor competition has been organised.

Exeter City has close links with Brazilian football having been Brazil’s first ever opponents in 1914. It is fitting therefore that a Futsal tournament has been organised as this indoor version of the game was developed in Brazil in the 1930s. Its name comes from the Portuguese ‘Futebol de salao’ – ‘hall football’.

The Futsal event is being supported by Exeter City Football in the Community, Devon FA, University of Exeter and the National Citizen Service.

The tournament kicks off at 2pm, entry is free and participants must be over 16.

Zoe Lyons joins the Rainbow Fund as its first ever Patron

Award winning comedian Zoe Lyons has been appointed as the first ever Patron of the Rainbow Fund.

Zoe Lyons
Zoe Lyons

The Rainbow Fund makes grants to local LGBT/HIV volunteer-led groups and works with Brighton Pride to distribute the £1 per ticket raised at the event to the organisations who need it most.

Zoe, who lives in the city, is well known for her regular TV and stage performances on shows such as Mock The Week and the Wright Stuff. She also hosts Komedia’s Bent Double comedy nights.

Zoe said: “I am very honoured to be the Rainbow Fund’s first Patron. I make no secret of the fact that I love living in Brighton. The city has historically had a strong LGBT presence and I feel it is important to support that community. The Rainbow Fund provides essential grants for local LGBT voluntary organisations that might not otherwise survive thus making sure that people have access to front line services they need in the city.”

Paul Elgood, Chairman of the Rainbow Fund added: “We are delighted that Zoe has agreed to be our first ever Patron. She is a strong role model for the LGBT community locally and will bring her very distinctive style to our work supporting a strong and vibrant local LGBT community sector. Her interests, especially those around LGBT older people and mental health very much mirror our own. What is so great about the Rainbow Fund is that we are lucky enough to have the resources to make a difference in the priority areas which we were established to support and so we look forward to working with Zoe to continue this.”

The Rainbow Fund recently re-established itself as an independent grant-giving organisation, after three years with the Sussex Community Foundation. During that time it gave out over £100,000 in grants to the city’s LGBT/HIV volunteer-led groups providing frontline services to the LGBT community.

There are no salaries or expenses attached to any role at the Rainbow Fund so that the maximum amount raised is given out in grants each year to deserving LGBT groups and organisations.

Award winning comedian Zoe Lyons has been “selling her comedy wares” on the comedy circuit since 2004. In 2009, much to her astonishment, she was ranked 81st in the Independent on Sunday’s “Pink List” of Britain’s 100 most influential gay and lesbian people.

Zoe has become a familiar face on TV with credits including Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC1) DAVE’s One Night Stand (Dave) and Don’t Sit In The Front Row (Sky Atlantic). She also regularly appears on The Wright Stuff (FIVE) and Mock The Week (BBC2).

As well as headlining comedy clubs across the UK and she is a regular visitor to the Edinburgh festival. Zoe has also worked extensively abroad including Australia, New Zealand the Far East and across Europe.

After moving to Brighton in 2004 Zoe started running the comedy night Bent Double at Komedia. The night is now a firm favourite on the Brighton scene.

In her spare time Zoe enjoys jogging along Brighton promenade and when she is not jogging she is usually eating!

Family of Cherry Groce, shot and paralysed by police in 1985 denied legal aid

Cherry Groce was shot in her home by police in 1985 in front of her children.

Cherry Groce

The shooting sparked the Brixton riots and to this day no one has been held accountable for what happened to her.

Cherry Groce
Cherry Groce

Cherry was left paralysed from the waist down and despite being given a life expectancy of 10 years by her doctors, she managed to live for another 26 years.

Independent reports indicate that the events of 1985 were a significant contributory factor in her death in 2011.

An inquest into her death is finally being held in June 2014, but the family has been denied legal aid. Without it they can’t afford a lawyer to represent them at the inquest and cross examine the police.

Her son Lee, said: “Without legal aid we will be financially excluded from participating, which means we are not able to adequately and effectively take part in such a complex case and it is unfair to expect us to do so whilst the other three interested parties are being publicly funded!”

“Following the request of a revealing report we have received an apology from the police which comes 28 years after the shooting (and is still yet to be made in public).”

The family have set up a petition to Chris Grayling MP, the Secretary of State for Justice calling for them to be given legal aid.

Stonewall’s Equality Dinner raises £395,000

Stonewall raised a record-breaking £395,000 at its annual Equality Dinner, sponsored by Aviva.

WEB.600

Money raised from the night will support Stonewall’s education work and help them tackle homophobia wherever it exists.

The night marked Stonewall’s 25th anniversary, with speeches from presenter, broadcaster and writer Sue Perkins and journalist and Stonewall founder, Matthew Parris. Both emphasised that while there was much to celebrate, there was still much to do.

WEB.600.6

The Dinner saw the launch of Stonewall’s No Bystanders campaign, with a 60 second film. The hard-hitting and powerful film demonstrates that, unchecked, the abusive language children learn in the playground stays with them into adulthood. The film is intended to encourages people – including gay people – to check their own language, and pledge not to be a bystander whenever they hear it from others.

Sir Ian McKellen

Stonewall co-founder Sir Ian McKellen, who also lends his voice to the film, said: “Abuse ruins people’s lives. We all have a responsibility to take a stand and put a stop to it. By making sure that bullying is reported and prejudice is challenged, we can help ensure that every person in Britain lives free from fear of persecution and violence.”

Ruth HuntRuth Hunt, Stonewall’s Acting Chief Executive said: ‘This powerful film starkly shows how easily prejudice and bullying can escalate from playground teasing to grown-up violence. No one can afford to be a bystander to this bullying and that is why we are calling on people to make the pledge: hear it, stop it.”
