A year of strong growth at East Sussex Credit Union

Credit Union’s annual surplus triples as members’ savings grow and lending activities increase.

2013/14 was a landmark year for East Sussex Credit Union as the organisation saw its surplus jump to £24,200; more than three times its projected budget for the year. Members’ savings grew 27% and lending activities again exceeded £1 million.

At the end of the financial year in April the credit union saw its asset base approach £2 million for the first time as business performance accelerated and the organisation took another important step on its journey towards sustainability.

East Sussex Credit Union’s President, Richard Priestman, said: “This has been a very significant year for our business.

“Given the challenging economic environment we have performed very strongly, demonstrating the real attraction to customers of our ethical, local brand.”

East Sussex Credit Union also delivered another good performance in terms of lending activities which rose 13% over the financial year with both loan numbers and loan size growing. The ongoing development of a policy to offer competitive larger loans to members was a highlight and now contributes significantly to the credit union’s success as these transactions tend to be for longer periods, offer improved returns and generate regular income in future years.

In 2013-14, larger loans represented almost 20% of total lending and aside from attracting a wider customer base, returns have allowed the provision of a greater volume of smaller loans which tend to be higher risk and can be loss making.

During the previous financial year East Sussex Credit Union was awarded significant grants from Brighton & Hove City Council to enable an increase in the scale of business operations in the city and allow online applications and servicing.

These changes have been made during 2014 with strategic additions to the workforce and the necessary upgrade to systems. In addition, the grant funds have supported an ongoing pilot for the provision of much smaller loans, reinforcing work with community money advice agencies to combat financial exclusion.

A similar large grant has very recently been agreed by East Sussex County Council to offer the credit union an even greater ability to extend its reach and develop business activities beyond Brighton & Hove so as to deliver services across the county. Work is now in hand on the development of an increased regional presence that is likely to be based in Eastbourne.

East Sussex Credit Union Ltd (ESCU) is a not for profit savings and loans co-operative, which has been operating locally since 2000 and is located at Community Base, 113 Queens Rd, Brighton, BN1 3XG.

Authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority, ESCU is one of the leading credit unions in the UK. The organisation has recently enjoyed rapid growth, with membership at an all-time high and almost £2 million in member savings.

PRIDE ARTS PREVIEW: ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’

New Venture Theatre’s second amateur production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, returns for a limited run as part of Brighton Pride’s Arts and Film Festival, 2014.

Hedwig & the Angry Inch

Following its huge success and sell-out shows at this years Brighton Fringe Festival 2014, Hedwig plays from July 31 to August 3 at the New Venture Theatre.

Internationally ignored song stylist Hedwig Schmidt is an East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation.

“It’s hard to think of a show that better embodies the values of acceptance, tolerance, love, and joy for life that make up the Pride movement. Hedwig has it all.” – director Frank Leon

Backed by hard-rocking band The Angry Inch on their East Sussex Tour, Hedwig tells us of her life’s search for The Origin of Love and the people who have made her the woman she is today.

Sugar daddies, punk idols, downtrodden Eastern European drag queens and the soulmate who stole her songs to achieve rock star fame; all put in an appearance.

It’s a rocking ride, funny, touching and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Residents encouraged to engage with housing strategy consultation

Kemptown MP encourages constituents to take part in the city council housing strategy consultation.

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven
Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown & Peacehaven

Simon Kirby, the Member of Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven is encouraging constituents to take part in the ongoing housing strategy consultation that is being run by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The City Council are currently developing their Housing Strategy for 2015-2019.

In June, the Council organised a conference about this, which was attended by various stakeholders and interested parties, including Letting Agents, Housing Associations and Student Unions. It was decided that further community engagement should take place and that a public consultation would be run prior to the report being produced later this year.

With housing such an important issue in Brighton and Hove, Mr Kirby is encouraging constituents to take part in the consultation and to have their say.

Simon said: “Whilst the decision for where to build houses is one for the City Council, I receive correspondence from constituents about housing matters in Brighton and Hove on a daily basis, and there is a need for new housing in the City. Therefore I have a keen interest in this issue.

“As the strategy will determine the City Council’s approach to housing for the next 4 years, it is very important that everybody has their say on how the strategy should look.

“My view is that the City Council should look at brownfield sites, city centre sites where the existing infrastructure is already in place to support development, and look again at projects like Shoreham harbour, before even considering precious greenfield, urban fringe, sites such as Meadow Vale and others.”

Manchester Pride to release tickets for those in financial hardship

300 day tickets will cost just £5 each.

Manchester Pride will be releasing 300 day tickets for the Big Weekend, available to Greater Manchester residents who are undergoing financial hardship.

Organisers are offering limited reduced price tickets to people who cannot afford to purchase a standard ticket. The tickets will cost £5, with monies going directly to the Manchester Pride Community Fund.

Mark FletcherMark Fletcher, Chief Executive for Manchester Pride, said: “This year’s Manchester Pride Festival is all about LOVE and we want everyone to have the opportunity to be a part of it, regardless of their financial status.

“We are keen to make a real difference and we hope that this initiative will make the whole event more inclusive for the wider community.”

The idea to release the 300 £5 tickets came from the Manchester Pride Community Collective which provides the opportunity for individuals representing community organisations and groups to act as an advisory body for inclusion at Manchester Pride – from planning and implementation to design and delivery.

Manchester Pride raises money for LGBT and HIV charities and projects within Greater Manchester and is one of the only UK Pride events to consistently do so. Since 2003, it has raised and distributed over £1.1million.

Manchester Pride has come in for considerable criticism in Mancheter during the last 12 months as the amount of money raised for good causes has reduced considerably over the last few years resulting in their offices being picketed earlier this year by detractors including former GayFest organiser Julia Grant.

Manchester Pride raised £34,000 for good causes in 2013.

The theme for Manchester Pride 2014 is LOVE and will be rolled out across the festival, whether it be to honour the same sex marriage act, or challenge the final pieces of the legislation.

PREVIEW: Rugby World Cup 2015

Rugby World CupTry Outs touch down in Brighton to find The Pack for Rugby World Cup 2015.

England Rugby 2015, the organising committee for Rugby World Cup 2015 (RWC 2015), has been in Brighton for the third leg of the volunteer Try Outs to find members of The Pack.

The selection process is an exciting and informative experience where potential members of The Pack will find out more about RWC 2015 and take part in a one-to-one interview.

The Try Outs include an exhibition space dedicated to the history of rugby, a motivational video for would-be volunteers and a real-life changing room to try kit on for size, complete with vintage rugby sweaters and an authentic heat spray ‘scent’.

Two England Women’s players, Michaela Staniford and Claire Purdy, along with MP for Brighton Kempton and Peacehaven, Simon Kirby, joined volunteers for the start of the event.

Michaela said: “I think the volunteers will make a real difference throughout Rugby World Cup 2015 next year because ‘The Pack’ embodies the values of the game all the way from grass roots up to the England team. The sheer number of applications is evidence of the positive influence Rugby can have on people’s lives, regardless of their age.”

Claire added: “Volunteers are of the upmost importance at all levels of the game. Without the mums, dads and support networks Rugby clubs would not be able to provide the great experience for members that they currently do. The same can be said for the volunteers that will be at Rugby World Cup 2015.”

Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven helped campaign for world cup matches to be brought to the Amex Stadium in 2015.

Simon said: “It was fantastic to see the Try Outs in action in Brighton, and to meet some of the brilliant local volunteer candidates. Volunteers will play a crucial part in ensuring that we give visitors and fans the best possible welcome and spectator experience when they visit our great town. I am confident that members of The Pack will do a wonderful job.”

As part of the selection process, potential members of The Pack are asked questions based on the values of the Game along with questions on suitability for the role that volunteers are being considered for in 2015.

There will be a range of roles throughout the lead up and delivery of the Tournament but they will mainly be focused on transport and spectator services. There will be a small number of specialist roles including roles in Media, Accreditation and workforce operations.

Debbie Jevans, Chief Executive of England Rugby 2015, said: “The Pack will welcome the world to England and Rugby World Cup 2015. We’re extremely thankful to all those who have volunteered their time to take part in the process, both in Brighton this week and at the events in all of our host cities across the year. We have had a fantastic level of interest and applications for the programme, which shows the great level of enthusiasm and excitement for volunteering and for the Tournament.

“These are interactive events which give prospective members of The Pack the opportunity to learn about the Tournament the role of The Pack and the wider Game of Rugby and its values. The feedback from participants has been extremely positive and so we only hope that this enthusiasm and excitement continues to grow as we continue our search to recruit ‘The Pack’ who will make RWC 2015 truly special.”

20,000 people applied to be members of The Pack and 10,000 people will be invited to attend the Try Outs to select the 6,000 people who will help welcome the world to England for the Tournament.

The Try Outs, which began in June this year, will run until December 2014 in every Rugby World Cup 2015 host city.

In line with the Tournament’s vision to have Rugby at the heart of the Tournament, 75% of The Pack will come from the Rugby Community who help run the game week in, week out. The rest will come from the general public, an opportunity to bring new people into Rugby.

People who have been successful in being selected to be part of The Pack will be notified in early 2015.

To date, Try Outs have taken place in The Home of Saracens Rugby, Allianz Park and at Leyton Orient FC’s Score Centre.

The Brighton Try Outs will run from July 9 – July 18, 2014.

Bristol Pride 2013

Pride are asking everyone to donate at least £3 this year as concerns grow in Bristol for the future of the event following Bristol City Council’s decision not to award the organisation behind the festival any Key Arts Provider Funding.

DJs The Freemasons headline the official afterparty at the O2 Academy with aerial performances from Circomedia along with eccentric party makers Sink The Pink, 90s club night Another Night and a specially created ‘Pop Paparazzi Parlour’ from performance artist Harry Clayton Wright.

Organiser Daryn Carter said: “2013 was our biggest year yet and we’re expecting record numbers this year with an amazing line up for both Pride Day and Night, which are a real coup for Bristol. We’ve created something truly special, an exciting and credible festival that uses a range of events to champion and celebrate LGBT talent and culture. We aim to keep building on the success of Pride, putting Bristol on the map and bringing it alive with new talent and award winning acts. We’re creating opportunities for people to celebrate and engage with LGBT arts and the community whilst making a stand against discrimination both here in Bristol and around the world.’’

Over 31,000 people attended Bristol Pride events last year with Blue and Sophie Ellis-Bextor headlining the free festival, which held 17 individual events across the week and had an economic impact of £953,500 to the local economy.

Bristol Pride is a celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community across the South West, but extends much further.

Earlier this year the plight of LGBT people in counties such as Russia were highlighted by the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and this year Bristol Pride has chosen the theme We Are: One as a chance for LGBT people, their friends, families and the whole of the South West to stand up and support gay rights on a global scale by maintaining a proud and visible presence and showing support to communities around the world.

Successful project to get women back onto their feet expands into Sussex

A scheme to help women offenders get their lives back on track is being expanded across Sussex.

Norman Baker MP

The Inspire Project, which is co-ordinated by the city’s Brighton Women’s Centre, has a good track record, having reduced women’s re-offending in Brighton & Hove in almost nine out of ten cases.

Inspire was recently visited by Government Minister Norman Baker MP for Lewes, who was impressed with their groundbreaking work.

Brighton Women’s Centre Director Lisa Dando, said: “I’m delighted that the Inspire Project is expanding to help women across Sussex turn away from crime.

“Most experts agree that the criminal justice system needs reform – especially for women offenders. If we want to reduce reoffending, and the harm it causes to women and families, we need to continue to build on solutions that work.”

Norman Baker MP

Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker, added: “The coalition government is committed to making sure that female offenders are given the support they need to turn their lives around.

“I am very impressed by the work of the Inspire Project, and I am delighted that the programme is expanding across Sussex.”

Rainbow Fund supports deaf people wanting to attend Brighton Pride

The Rainbow Fund’s Independent Grants Panel has agreed to fund a package of measures to support deaf people to attend Pride events this year.

Rainbow Fund Chairman Paul Elgood presents Billie Lewis the Chair of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, with a £3,000 grant to facilitate deaf intrepreters at Brighton Pride, 2014
Rainbow Fund Chairman Paul Elgood presents Billie Lewis the Chair of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, with a £3,000 grant to facilitate deaf intrepreters at Brighton Pride, 2014

The bid, submitted by the LGBT Community Safety Forum Accessibility Matters group will, for the first time make Brighton Pride fully accessible to LGBT people with hearing loss.

A £3,000 Rainbow Fund grant will pay for a programme of signed performances and services around the park and parade with British Sign Language interpreters forming part of a wider package of support co-ordinated by Accessibility Matters.

The BSL interpreters are highly skilled (level 6) and are a vital part of the service Accessibility Matters will deliver on the day to older people, disabled people and deaf people.

Billie Lewis

Billie Lewis, Chair of the Brighton & Hove LGBT Community Safety Forum, said: “We consulted with the deaf community in the city earlier this year and they were adamant that access for deaf people to Pride had been problematic or non-existent in the past.

“We listened and developed a plan to facilitate the delivery of a service that would empower the LGBT deaf community not only to access Pride but to feel connected to the wider community and the groups and services offered within it.

“Through the generosity of the Rainbow Fund, The LGBT Safety Forum and leaders of the deaf community are delighted that it is possible for the deaf members of our community to have proper access to participate in Brighton Pride 2014”.

Paul Elgood
Paul Elgood

Paul Elgood, Rainbow Fund chairman added: “The Rainbow Fund’s Independent Grants Panel unanimously supported this proposal to extend access at the Pride event. Pride themselves have a huge task in organising this national event and cannot be expected to do everything themselves. This kind of innovative project can help every single person access Pride and ensure that all are included regardless.

“This is a fantastic project for us to help support the LGBT deaf community to attend Pride, and try to help ensure that all feel included.

“We are proud that the Rainbow Fund can help use the money donated to it by the community for such an exciting piece of work, which underlines our total commitment to equality for all.”

“All grant funding decisions are decided by the Rainbow Fund’s Independent Grants Panel, which has an open appointment process in terms of new members. The money for this grant was raised during the year by groups, venues and events put on in aid of the Rainbow Fund and we are grateful to all of our supporters who have helped to make grants such as this possible.”
