Chair of judges Paul Burston, said: “This is a really strong, diverse long list. From novels and short stories to memoir, monologues, poetry and political calls to arms, it demonstrates the wealth of literary talent our community continues to produce and reflects the many challenges LGBT+ people still face in today’s society.

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in UK, it is an important reminder of the role literature has to play in championing voices from the community and new work exploring the LGBT+ experience.”

Judges for the 2017 prize include author, journalist and host of Polari Literary Salon, chair Paul Burston; Rachel Holmes, author and former Head of Literature & Spoken Word at the Southbank; literary critic, Suzi Feay; author and comedian, VG Lee; and playwright, actor and producer, Alexis Gregory.

The shortlist of up to 6 titles will be announced on Monday July 31, 2017 at a special Polari Literary Salon hosted at the Southbank Centre.

This will coincide with a bumper series of events organised by the multi award-winning salon, as it celebrates 10 years of championing LGBT+ voices in literature, with the largest ever LGBT+ literary tour undertaken in the UK.

The 16-date tour will start at Bradford Literature Festival on July 7 and will move on to a special event at Hull Pride/City of Culture on July 27 marking the anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act 1967.

Danny’s birthday party raises £2,003.75 for charity

Danny Dwyer from Bear-Patrol celebrated his birthday with friends at the Hove Rugby Club on Saturday, June 10.

Entertainment was provided by Jason Lee who compared the evening and Marilyn Monroe act Laura Nixon, Krissie DuCann and Kara Van Park.

Danny asked people attending to make donations to the Sussex Cancer Fund rather than send cards or bring presents.

£2,003.75 was donated which will be used to pay for the supervision of volunteer counsellors who are seeing patients and relatives attending the Sussex Cancer Centre

Julia Lenton from Sussex Cancer Fund, said: “Currently the Sussex Cancer Fund pay for the supervision of volunteer counsellors who are seeing patients and relatives attending the Sussex Cancer Centre, this costs the charity £100 per month, Danny has agreed for the £2003 to go towards this service which means that he is funding  two years of volunteer counselling supervision.

“There has been a gradual  increase in the number of counselling referrals over the years and as a result we will need to recruit some more volunteer counsellors  to support the service – this of course will mean a rise in costs each month for supervision.

“We are so grateful to Danny and the Bear–Patrol for their ongoing support which will really make a difference to cancer patients in the City.”

Polish couple have dream wedding in Madeira

Polish couple finally get married at Ocean Cliff, Madeira on June 9.

Polish gay couple Jakub Kwiecinski and Dawid Mycek hit the headlines last year when a home-made video of them lipsynching the Roxette song Some other Summer went viral after the group included it on the their fan website.

They went on to make a similar video lipsynching to Niebiesko-zielone, a track from the Polish Gay Iconic singer Beata Kozidrak; but then the threats began. The pair suffered personal threats from right-wing groups in Poland who called for Beata’s concerts to be boycotted and all because of the video.

Not deterred by the threats, the couple decided they were going to get married. As this was not possible in Poland they chose the Portuguese island of Madeira to tie the knot.

The local register office on the island initially rejected their request but after hearing about the homophobia the couple had suffered in Poland changed their decision.

David said: “If we couldn’t get married in our country, we wanted to choose a place that is close to our hearts.

“There are countries where it is easier to get marriage permission, but we chose Madeira because we fell in love with the Island a few years ago, and since then we visit it every year.”

“It’s sad that we could not get married in Poland but we know the law will not be changed anytime soon in our country, so decided to marry abroad.

“I wish our grandmothers and grandfathers were here with us but the journey would have been too exhausting for them. If we had been allowed to have this ceremony in Poland they would have been allowed to share these moments with us, we really missed them.”.

Their most recent video is A Tribute to George Michael recorded with the Polish LGBT+ Society, draws attention to the fact that same-sex unions and marriages are still illegal in Poland.

Bristol Pride Week – plans unveiled

Plans for this year’s Bristol Pride Festival events have been released, revealing an exciting week of events to bring the city alive with Pride.

As well as established favourites such the Pride Dog Show (Saturday July 1), the LGBT+ Gaming Event at Kongs (Sunday, July 2), and Theatre and Comedy nights, this year also sees an expanded Film Festival take over the Watershed from June 30 – July 9.

With exciting features and a new shorts programme in partnership with the IRIS Prize, this year Bristol Pride (and the audience) will make selections for the Best of British selection where the winner has the chance to win £20,000 in post-production support from Elstree Studios.

Events kick off on Thursday, June 29 with an evening dedicated to exploring gender equality in the workplace with Irwin Mitchell Law Firm and LGBT+ Engineering network group InterEngineering.

Friday sees the Launch of Queer Vision, the Bristol Pride Film Festival, with an exclusive preview of Centre of My World, which is a stunning adaptation of Andreas Steinhoefel’s award-winning novel. Joyful, funny, and at times sad, this is for everyone who has ever looked for love, found it, or can’t figure out exactly what to do with it.

Other highlights in the film festival include a screening of the anarchic and inspirational Itty Bitty Titty Committee (Saturday, July 1) and Miles (Sunday, July 9) which stars Molly Shannon and Missi Pyle and tells the story of Miles who is desperate for the way to get to college and finds a volleyball scholarship exists, the only catch? His school only has a girl’s team.

The Pride Theatre Night on (Tuesday, July 4) at The Wardrobe will see two showings of a gender role reversed version of the incredibly popular Murder, She Didn’t Write by local troupe Degrees of Error. Murder He, Didn’t Write is a live improvised murder mystery which takes its lead from the audiences so expect two very different shows to get you guessing whodunnit.

Extra theatrics come from performance artist Tom Marshman who presents two outings at Pride this year with his Hot Dates with History at the Red Lodge on (Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1) and a special presentation of his Kings Cross (Remix) show which will be at Zion in Bedminster Down as part of Pride’s outreach programme across wider Bristol

Always a highlight to the Pride Week the Comedy event takes place on Thursday, July 6 at the Bierkeller Theatre. Artists performing this year include Bristol local and the award-winning Jayde Adams, London-based American actor and comedian David Mills who’s cocktail-lounge-lizard image belies an acerbic wit cut with fire-and-brimstone rants and Trans comedian Bethany Black who is a regular on the Edinburgh Fringe circuit and starred in Channel 4’s Banana, Tofu, Cucumber series.

Of course, the week of events is the precursor to the big weekend which this year sees Pride expanding with a new Friday night concert on the harbourside headlined Belinda Carlisle, as the iconic American pop singer celebrates 30 years since the release of her triple platinum album, Heaven On Earth. She’ll be joined on the night by Walking on Sunshine singer Katrina [Of The Waves] and electro pop duo Avec Sans.

Pop Rock band Busted will headline Pride Day on Saturday, July 8 on the Bristol Amphitheatre and At-Bristol’s Millennium Square. Amassing an incredible 8 UK top 3 hits and 4 number 1’s including What I Go To School For, Year 3000, Crashed The Wedding and Air Hostess the band have sold over 5 million albums worldwide, won 2 Brit Awards and in 2004 were awarded Record of The Year.

The team reckon this will be their biggest festival to date boasting their biggest line up for Pride Day which again includes an eclectic mix of international and local acts which sees other acts performing on Pride Day include ‘Crush’ singer Jennifer Paige, Xfactor’s Saara Aalto, 80s artist Sonia, boyband Union J, Voice finalist Jordan Gray and Charlie Hides who has been competing on the current Season 9 of international hit TV show Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

After rocking Glastonbury last year Welsh singer Charlotte Church will bring her Late Night Pop Dungeon to the Bristol Pride afterparty at the O2 Academy along with DJ’s Horse Meat Disco and local favourites Don’t Tell Your Mother.

Pride Day (July 1) will start with a parade through the city departing 11am from Castle Park. This longer parade route will pass through the city centre to give a voice to the community, combat prejudice and proudly celebrates the city’s LGBT+ communities.

Bristol Pride remains one of the UKs largest Pride events and will again be Bristol’s largest community celebration.

Pride Day is donation entry but Pride are offering £5 supporter wristbands for Pride Day which offer free travel with First Bus, money off the bars at Pride, £1 journeys with Bristol Ferrys as well as other fantastic rewards.

BOOK REVIEW: Meg & Linus: Hanna Nowinski

Meg & Linus

Hanna Nowinski

This month’s LGBTQ young adult pick is superb. Can friendship, Star Trek, drama club, and a whole lot of coffee get two nerdy best friends through the beginning of their senior year of high school?

Meg and Linus are best friends bound by a shared love of school, a coffee obsession, and being queer. It’s not always easy to be the nerdy lesbian or gay kid in a suburban town. But they have each other, and a few Star Trek box sets. They’re pretty happy.

But then Sophia, Meg’s long-time girlfriend, breaks up with Meg. Linus starts tutoring the totally dreamy new kid, Danny—and Meg thinks setting them up is the perfect project to distract herself from her own heartbreak. But Linus isn’t so sure Danny even likes guys, and maybe Sophia isn’t quite as out of the picture as Meg thought she was.

Nowinski’s narrative which alternates between the perspectives of passionate, anxious, chubby gay nerd Linus, who has a desperate secret crush on barista Danny, and his similarly nerdy and theatre-loving best friend, Meg is a fun friendship story about two quirky teens who must learn to get out of their comfort zones and take risks, even if that means joining the drama club, making new friends, and learning how to stand on your own.

Out now, £15. Hardback
